Who gives way on Cotter Road?

By switch - 29 May 2013 5

Going out this morning, I have to pass though the mess that is McCulloch St/Cotter Road/Lady Denman drive. We now have single lane working at the lights in McCulloch Street, guided by a road worker doing point duty. But the lights are still on, making things very confusing for some. Coming back, wanting to turn right into Cotter Rd off Lady Denman I have someone coming straight towards me, having misread where he was supposed to turn right into Lady Denman from Cotter Rd and turned into my lane instead. Turning left into McCulloch, I observe someone trying to go onto the new bit of road, even though it is currently blocked off and not in use. Really a place to avoid, if you can.

Why have they taken a functional, two lanes each way set of lights and a roundabout and turned it into a pair of two lanes each way sets of lights? When it’s finished, I mean, certainly not right now! Just to add bike lanes? And given the lack of attention ever paid in this town to synchronising traffic lights, it will not surprise me at all if it ends up being a bigger bottleneck than it ever was before.

What’s Your opinion?

Looks like they are putting in a 4th crossing in McCulloch Street. The whole road will be one big crossing shortly. What is the ACT gov thinking.. I know this is a busy road but having all the speed bumps (crossings) isn’t slowing anyone down.

These crossings just bug me. I’ve lived in the area a couple of years now, before there were any crossings, and I really don’t see how they’ve helped at all.

You may also see bus stop bays for a future Rapid/Xpresso route from Molonglo/Weston Creek. Which will serve Curtin & Yarralumla.

I was told that the Golden Sun Moth (protected species) is active in this area.

The golden sun moth must really like land totally stripped of vegetation and flattened by many bits of heavy machinery driving over it (south side of Cotter Rd) or living in a dead tree dump waiting to be woodchipped (north side).

Yours truly suggested a single intersection along Cotter road at this point ,by either realigning McCulloch st or Lady Denman drive. I was told that the Golden Sun Moth (protected species) is active in this area. The whole of Cotter road is being duplicated, the upgrade wasn’t just to add cycle lanes, cycle tracks would have been the better solution. But this is not a ‘community path route’ apparently. Those that don’t ride on cycle lanes have to take the longer detour route from Woden to Weston.
The next stage will be from Yarralumla creek to the Tuggeranong parkway.
What this upgrade will ultimately do is cause more congestion onto Adelaide Ave and Commonweatlh Ave.
