Canberra’s first regional week long celebration, Woden Alive, will see the Woden Valley community and everything it has to offer on display from Oct 30 – Nov 5. Woden Alive is an exciting new initiative that takes place at various venues and businesses throughout the Woden Valley and climaxes at the Woden Valley Festival on Saturday November 5.

The Week of ‘Woden Alive’ will offer Canberrans a deeper look at the Woden Valley’s best venues and help unearth some of the regions ‘hidden gems’ . It will feature some of Australia’s most well known celebrities alongside some great community grassroots events. Feature events include ‘Homemade Jam’ a singer / songwriter competition at Bite to Eat, George Calombaris from ‘Masterchef’ hosting a dinner at the Hellenic Club, Local circus troupe ‘Warehouse Circus’ performing their yearly performance spectacular at the Chifley Well being hub, as well as ‘So you think you can dance’ finalist Timomatic performing at the Hellenic Club for a special live performance. These are just some of the many events that are happening in the week of Woden Alive.

Another highlight of the week will be the annual Woden Valley Festival. In 2011 the Festival will feature nationally renowned band April Maze playing alongside locals Bridge Between and Minh Ha. There will also be dance and cultural performers, rides, interactive workshops, the ususal yummy food plus a variety of themed villages on display!

Just to clear up any confusion with those that may not want be interested in heavy metel with their woodfire pizza at the Woden Valley Festival…
Cheers

If such a person exists I will punch them right in the goolies.

And to qbngeek: you must have your earlids closed. There is plenty ‘o’ metal in Canberra, check out The Basement, ANU, Tuggers Youth Centre (yep, you heard), and the Maram (who, incidentally, will be pimped by Xzibit later this year).

Re: Woden Valley Festival. Its always a challege in these community events to cator for different audiences. By making the Liftoff Festival a standalone event which takes place after the Woden Valley Festival – we are able to embrace a niche youth culture while aiming the Woden Valley Festival to a much wider audience during the day.

We think its great that these diverse audiences are catered to within the Woden Alive program. Showcasing diversity within our culture is one of our objectives.

This is an odd headliner!! All the kids will be frothing over this.

WWWWWWOOOOOOHHHHHHHOOOOOOOOOOOO

About time Canberra got some decent metal happening. I have been trying to get metal in Canberra for years and have had minimal success as clubs and pubs are not interested. Its a shame because there is a lot of metal bands and fans in Canberra that travel to Sydney for gigs, myself included.

Do us all a favour, next time you go, stay there

Meh, go back to your hippy folk music.

You don’t often hear of glassings at live music and metal events, but they seem to be a weekly occurance at dance music venues, so why are venues that play top 40/rap/dance/techno preferred over live music and metal venues?

Well said. I love metal gigs, and there never seems to be a problem.

The Woden Valley Festival goes from 10am – 3am and will be headlined by April Maze and supported by Minh Ha, The Bridge Between.

The Liftoff Festival starts after the Woden Valley Festival and goes from 4pm – 9pm. The Liftoff Festival is the youth section of the Festival and will feature a local band competetion followed by hardcore ‘Confession’.

Please see the website for more info on the bands playing during the day.

We will update our website to reflect this.

Cheers

Looks like they plan to resurrect Woden from the dead. Good on ’em.
