Kudos to TAMS. Rapid response on Killer Pigeons

Astonishing service from our friends at Territory and Municipal Services. I posted the following request via the excellent CanberraConnect website on Monday last, 6 May:

Subject: Potentially fatal pigeons under Drakeford Drive

Dear TAMS,

I was wondering whether you could install anti-pigeon-roosting spikes above the bike path in the Drakeford underpass (near Athllon Drive intersection – see map). Dozens of pigeons roost there, and cyclists often approach at speed, since it is the bottom of a hill. The bastards get startled and flap around in a panic at about cyclist-head height. I have had several near misses and would greatly appreciate the birds being moved on.

Please reply by email. Kind regards,

Matthew

On Wednesday morning, less than 48 hours later, I rode through that underpass and, would you believe it, a worker was up on a ladder erecting anti-pigeon fortifications!

I had to stop and express my gratitude and amazement at the prompt response. I enjoyed a brief but informative discussion about the sixty (60!) pigeon-borne diseases that I could have had a faceful of, had not swift action been taken.

I guess that’s why I pay my taxes.

What about getting rid of the pigeons from under the bridge on Hindmarsh Drive, the overpass of Tuggeranong Parkway; from under the bridge on the Cotter Road that goes over the Tuggeranong Parkway, many pigeons there too.

While at it they can ensure that all bridges under/over passes are made birdproof.

What about the tree’s they might also contain dangerous birds.

D’ya think I’ll get action within 48 hours folks? They still haven’t fixed the hazards at the entry to the slip lane on W.H Dr. going to Woden as I requested on 2nd March, but i suppose the moving of the 60km/h zone back towards Belconnen may have been their solution…

You aren’t riding a bike…

Oh, how wrong you are. My bike has two wheels, handlebars, lights and 900cc of pure grunt. A single roo will damage me much worse than an entire flock of birds could you. Any sympathy now?? At least a little empathy?

Was this about Launceston Street, by any chance?

No, the terrible job they did on Athlon Dr. Absolute rubbish job they did, to the point where I arrived home and had gravel settled near my wipers where the bonnet lip joins the windscreen.

I’ll give TAMS credit though, looks like a good job they did. I would have expected a scarecrow or something along those lines.

You’re kidding right!? The last Canberra Connect ‘service delivery’ person I spoke to told me the problem I reported didn’t exist (I reported un-swept gravel on a newly ‘sealed’ road that was damaging cars, especially when stuck behind buses). He got very defensive and told me that I should stop driving behind buses and not worry about loose gravel.

They never contact me when I report a problem, never fix the problem and my submissions seem to be lost into the abyss. Perhaps they’re too busy fixing pigeon problems for cyclists to listen to anyone else…

Pigeons are not to be underestimated. Sadly, a young LACW contracted TB (I think thats what it was, if I’m mistaken it was a similarly bad illness) attributed to pigeon poo in the hangars at RAAF base Edinburgh.

Not that long ago…

I agree, but at the end of the day this is another example of great work done by those who do service delivery in ACT Government.

But CanberraConnect and the overall workflow process seems to be working well.

Well done ACT Govt Service Delivery Public Servants.

My experience has been that TAMS are very quick to respond to things that could cause accidents and subsequent legal action.

There was a ginormous pothole/road subsidence on Sutton road which was causing drivers to swerve on to the wrong side of the road, which I reported. They were very quick to fix it.

I’ll reserve my comment on their masters however.

I wondered why there were no pidgeons when I rode through there last week.

I didnt look up to see the barriers.

On the speed thing, it doesnt matter what speed you are doing, the get just as startled going up the hill at 20 as they do when you come down the hill at speed.

The bastards get startled and flap around in a panic. I have seen that behaviour when they’re in a pack and spot a pothole on Uriarra Drive.

Oh wait … you meant the pigeon bastards …

Dear TAMS,
Can you please place some 12 foot high razor wire fencing along the entire length of William Hovell Drive? Hundreds of Kangaroos graze by the side of the road and when people drive their cars along there at the designated speed limit during the twilight hours with their headlights on, it startles the animals and they jump in front of the vehicles. There are dozens of collisions every week and I’d like to see them protected from being squished and also protect the occupants of the vehicles whose insurance claims would more than likely balance the cost of the fence suggested.

It annoys me that the City Rangers don’t take effective action against the old guy who feeds the pidgeons in Petrie Plaza every morning. Hundreds of birds now roost in the area, as a result, and their mess is everywhere.

Gee, maybe you should make a formal complaint. You can sign it Scrooge McBastard.

Pigeons don’t carry anymore diseases than any other birds, it’s a shame they’re so maligned. I’ve got a bit of a soft spot for ’em, I must admit.

So cyclists have moved to shaft pigeons too and not just road users?

The problem could also be solved by putting a speed limit there so the pigeons weren’t startled.

Pigeons have been under most of these underpasses since they were built…

Well, doesn’t one very peeved off lycra wearing cyclist, sporting a badge of white pigeon poop, pose a serious danger to traffic?

Mine too, although the exception to this rule seems to be ever lengthening dip on the GDE Barton Hwy overpass (north bound). My little car is almost bottoms out. The “Traffic Hazard Ahead” placards aren’t going to fix anything.
