Design advice for courses online from Canberra?

“Holden Caulfield” do you think the subscription to Lynda for a year is an overkill or worth it?

I’ve recently started giving one on one graphic design lessons using Adobe Photoshop, Indesign and Illustrator. Generally my students (mostly adults) have their own copies of the software, and we meet up to work on a specific project together on their computer. I could definitely show you around the software and give you a grounding in graphic design, I’ve worked as a graphic designer for about 5 years. lynda.com is awesome and addictive. I believe you can get a 7-day free trial? It’s only about US$25 a month anyway, an absolute bargain for the quality of the courses. For Adobe Creative Suite I have enjoyed Deke McLelland’s instruction.

Or – just buy a Creative Cloud subscription, play around, hit F1 lots (help), and watch heaps of youtube tutorials. If it’s not for you resume, just learn how to do the cool tricks, then deepen you knowledge over time…

what sort of design do you want to do?

cit solutions is the hobby-level course of the cit and are usually of a pretty good standard. i’d recommend having a look for them [google is good]

A good knowledge of the programs? Please. There are 17 programs in the final release of Creative Suite, many more than that as part of its successor Creative Cloud.

Even the people who work with these programs day in day out, and tend to specialise in one area of the suite, have trouble keeping up.

Yeah, I’d second that, Lynda, CreativeLive which is a new one, and similar services.

This is just a personal thing, so you’re not going to be claiming it back on tax, and you’re presumably not working to a tight deadline. So choose what your interest is. Adobe’s creative software covers a wide gamut, Photography, Video, Bitmap and Vector graphics, Video editing, special effects compositing, page layout, audio production. And just go at your own pace and enjoy it.
