A motorbike rider travelling at more than 130 km/h and a driver of a fully-loaded semi-trailer driving through a red light have been issued with infringement notices over a weekend period in which ACT Policing also conducted almost 700 roadside breath tests (RBT).
Today (30 November 2020) marks the end of ACT Policing’s monthly traffic focus on the fatal five risk factors: speeding, distraction, drink or drug driving, not wearing a seatbelt and intersections.
A Sutton man was fined $1841 and received six demerit points after his motorbike was detected travelling at 132 km/h in an 80 km/h stretch of the Barton Highway at about 9:00 pm on Friday night (27 November 2020).
At about 10:40 pm on Thursday (26 November) a Moncrieff man was issued an infringement notice after his fully loaded B-double truck failed to stop at a red light on the Federal Highway.
“With a full load, a truck of this size could easily have weighed up to 60 tonnes. If that collided with another vehicle we wouldn’t be talking about just a fine, there is a very real chance it could have ended in tragedy,” Officer in Charge of Road Policing Detective Acting Inspector Ivan Naspe said.
On Friday night police conducted an RBT operation on Barry Drive in Acton testing 327 motorists. Two drivers recorded a blood alcohol content (BAC) above the legal limit (0.05).
On Thursday, 26 November 2020, police conducted an RBT operation on Ginninderra Drive in Lyneham testing 357 motorists. Three drivers received infringements for driving over the legal limit.
One driver also returned a presumptive result for cannabis and methamphetamine when drug tested.
A 25-year-old probationary driver will also be summonsed after failing to comply with interlock conditions in his vehicle.
