Multiple alleged breaches of family violence bail conditions detected by ACT police

Two Canberra men have been arrested within 24 hours for breaching their family violence bail conditions during compliance checks by ACT Policing’s Family Violence Unit.

The two men – a 22-year-old from Belconnen and a 44-year-old from Florey – were found in the company of their partners during separate visits by police on Tuesday (16 May). The Florey man was also charged with contravening a family violence order.

A statement revealed the FVU has made three arrests for warrants, two arrests for breach of bail, two arrests for outstanding wanted offenders and one arrest for contravention of a family violence order in the past two weeks alone.

A woman was also arrested for allegedly obstructing and assaulting police during the arrest of her partner.

“ACT Policing’s FVU will continue to proactively investigate and target family violence offending in the ACT to promote victim safety and ensure offender accountability,” a police statement said.

An Evatt man also fronted court earlier in the week following his arrest on family violence and weapons offences. He was arrested after police were called to his home after receiving reports of a disturbance on Monday (15 May) evening.

Officers arrived and spoke with a person who alleged they had been assaulted by the man, and located him nearby a short time later.

Police said they found a flick knife, knuckle-dusters, a taser and a canister of pepper spray when they searched the bag the man was holding at the time. A search of a neighbouring yard also led to the seizure of a short sword. All of these items are considered prohibited weapons in the ACT.

The man was charged with four counts of possessing a prohibited weapon, two counts of aggravated property damage, and single counts of possessing an offensive weapon with intent, common assault, attempted assault occasioning actual bodily harm, choke/suffocate/strangle another person, and aggravated reckless threat to kill a person.
