ACT's 10th road fatality for 2024: e-bike rider dies after crashing on Athllon Drive

A cyclist died after crashing in southern Canberra on the weekend, becoming the ACT’s 10th road fatality for 2024.

An ACT Policing spokesperson said police received a report at around 5 pm on Sunday (24 November) that a cyclist on an e-bike had been riding on a bike path adjacent to Athllon Drive before he crashed into a wall at an underpass.

While emergency services arrived and treated the 66-year-old at the scene, he was declared deceased a short time later.

“ACT Road Policing’s Major Collision Team is investigating the circumstances of the collision and a report will be prepared for the coroner,” the police spokesperson said.

Nine people have already died from crashes on the ACT’s roads so far this year.

Joshua Stewart, 19, died in January after the allegedly stolen vehicle he was travelling in was involved in a crash on the Barton Highway. A 14-year-old boy has been charged and is before the courts, while a teenage passenger in the car died months after the crash.

Tennis Canberra coach Alicia Celaya Jauregui was killed while riding her bike on Lady Denman Drive in March.

A flipped Toyota Camry was found in the middle of Adelaide Avenue in Yarralumla on 17 April, and a 15-year-old boy was transported to hospital where he later died. Another 15-year-old has been charged with manslaughter over the crash.

A 46-year-old male motorbike rider died after a single-vehicle crash on Brindabella Road on 21 April, while another was killed in a two-vehicle crash near the intersection of Sulwood and Athllon drives on 23 May.

A 47-year-old died after a motorcycle and a light truck crashed near an intersection in Holt on 18 June, a 28-year-old motorcyclist died after a fall on Gungahlin Drive on 25 October, a 33-year-old died after a single-vehicle accident on Lady Denman Drive on 31 October, while a 26-year-old man died after a single-vehicle crash on 10 November.

Also, a head-on car crash resulted in the death of a seven-month-old unborn baby on Parkes Way on 16 November.
