From making sure we look our best for the day ahead to unwinding in the evening with a relaxing bath, most people spend a considerable amount of time in the bathroom. In fact, the average person will spend 416 days in the bathroom over their lifetime. Given the high number of hours, it’s easy to see why bathrooms are a popular renovation choice.

Besides the fact that having a functional and aesthetically pleasing bathroom will make your life a lot easier, an up-to-date bathroom can add significant value to your home in the future.

If you’re considering a bathroom renovation, it can be difficult to know where to start. The best bathroom renovators will advise you on design, timeline, cost, the demands of the Canberra property market (if you’re eventually looking to sell or lease your home), and other useful information that you wouldn’t be able to obtain on your own.

So, what specific qualities should you look for in a bathroom renovation company, and how can you find the best?

What makes a great bathroom renovation company?

Not sure what you are looking for in a bathroom renovation company? No need to worry. Keep the following characteristics in mind:

  • Extensive portfolio. Ask to view a company’s portfolio of bathroom renovations before you engage its services. That way, you can determine whether it has the skills to deliver the bathroom of your dreams.
  • Experience. Not all building companies specialise in bathroom renovations. Look for a company that has extensive experience renovating bathrooms, which can be more complex than other types of renovations. Bathrooms need to look great but also be waterproof, compliant and functional.
  • Transparent pricing. Your bathroom renovation company should be upfront with you about how much things will cost. Quotes and invoices should be transparent, with no unexpected additional fees or charges. If unexpected costs or extras do arise, the best companies will always consult you before engaging these costs.
  • Reliable and respectful. From tilers to plumbers, look for a company with tradespeople who arrive on time and ready to work. The best treat customers’ homes like their own – keeping mess and disruption to a minimum, while being careful with your belongings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it possible to do my bathroom renovation myself?

Doing your own bathroom renovation is possible but not advisable. While painting walls and retiling the floors might be achievable, navigating the plumbing and installing new systems require professional help that bathroom renovation companies specialise in. Hiring a professional ensures a high-quality, durable and good-looking space. It also helps you to avoid the headache of having to eventually repair poorly installed pieces.

Why should I renovate my bathroom?

There are so many benefits to renovating your bathroom. It can give you an opportunity to install more-efficient systems that save water. You can also avoid a build-up of mildew by increasing the ventilation. You can even optimise the space available to you while giving it a more modern look.

Does renovating my bathroom add value to my home?

If you're planning on eventually selling or leasing your property, renovating the bathroom can prove to be an extremely lucrative choice, particularly if your old bathroom was built decades ago. While it may seem like a great cost now, the returns later on may outweigh it. A modern, durable and sustainable bathroom can add a great deal of value to your house.

How much does it cost to renovate a bathroom?

This depends entirely on what you're having done. Taking into account jobs such as retiling, fixture refitting, plumbing and installation of new appliances, the renovation may involve some high costs. This could be anywhere from $5000 to $15,000 or more.

Can I choose my fixtures and appliances for my bathroom?

Absolutely. The bathroom renovation company will guide you through the design process and help you decide what will work best for your space. It will also be able to recommend suppliers to you, and might even secure a discounted trade price. Alternatively, you can source your fixtures and appliances independently and the renovators can install them for you.

Darmody Projects were recommended to me by a colleague and they were amazing. Not a day went by without a trade working. Sam helped us refine our choices to get what we wanted within our budget. Four weeks later and we have a stunning ensuit for a great price. Don’t go past them.

I’ve been doing bathroom renovations in Canberra for the past 17 years. I don’t employ other tilers or demolition team. I do most of the work myself. That means you get to hold just one person responsible for improving the most relaxing and serene area of your home, to transform it’s style and value. From design to strip out, carpentry, tiling, waterproofing, plastering, painting and most of the fit off. My bathrooms come with a 7 year unconditional structural tiling and waterproofing integrity guarantee. I spend about 30% of my time fixing other mistakes from rogues. I specialise in complete bathroom renovations Canberra, tiling, waterproofing, leaking shower repairs, shower reseals and can do kitchens too. Get in touch for any queries!

Oliver and his team from SALT Renovations delivered a bathroom/ laundry renovation far exceeding our dreams and expectations. The team of tradesmen and Lisha were professional, accommodating and terrific to work with. We can’t fault the workmanship. Josh has been available with every and any small question and was on-site almost every day. The bathroom looks fantastic, the work was done on schedule and we had no hidden surprises. We highly recommend these guys and will definitely have them back to come renovate our kitchen. By far the best renovation experience we have ever had.

I would definitely recommend SALT Renovations. Oli and his team were great to work with. They were always professional, trustworthy and polite and we ended up with a beautiful and high quality ensuite that we are very happy with.

Hi Fiona

Thank you for your lovely review. It is always wonderful to hear that our clients are happy, it literally is making our day!!!

I highly recommend Terry from allstar bathrooms Canberra. He just finished our bathroom and ensuite renovation. I have now booked him in for our laundry. He was punctual, kept his work area spotless and was affordable!

L&J Designs and AES Homes (Adam) Jayde and Lisa (L&J Designs) and AES Homes (Adam) did an absolutely amazing job for us. We renovated 2 bathroom, laundry, master bedroom and walk in wardrobe. Our old laundry was horrible, with just a sink, an angled wall and two doors. Now I have the lots of storage, a beautiful sink and bench, plenty of cupboards and it works so well. They turned a tiny main bathroom into a luxury bathroom with spa, two sinks, niches, shower and spa (including TV). The walk in wardrobe is brilliant and the Ensuite just fantastic. They drew up plans, designed and scoped everything out and worked closely with our builder AES Homes (Adam). They all made the whole process so streamlined and we ended up with a fantastic result. Would highly recommend L&J Designs and AES Homes

Mark and his team were recommended to us by a friend. From the start to the finish, Mark and his team were professional, courteous and obviously well trained. If they said the were attending on a certain day, you could be guaranteed the team would be on site.
After the build was finished, Mark would only accept absolute perfection.

I highly recommend Mark Sheppard Bathroom Renovations.

Jenny Rowland6:24 pm 19 Dec 21

It was obvious from the start that Mark’s goal was to provide a high quality job at a reasonable price that would last a lifetime. On the day he came to quote I found him to be very knowledgeable, genuine and straightforward. The whole project was managed by a efficient site manager and I was provided with detailed daily reports and photos showing their progress. The cost included the time of a very helpful interior designer.

The contract I signed to accept the quote ensured I knew upfront what my exact costs were and the specifications of the work to be carried out. The site manager ensured that all the trades did their work as set out in the contract. Anything not up to their high standards was corrected immediately. After seeing the quality of their work there was definitely extra work requested. Any extra work or variations were quoted and presented for my approval to ensure no surprises.

I was working from home at the time and all of Mark’s staff were an absolute pleasure to have in my home. They were punctual, reliable, polite and extremely helpful. No question was too stupid to ask (and I asked them) – they were all patiently answered. It was a pleasure to have them show up to my house every morning and see how they enjoyed their job and working for Mark.

The final outcome shows that Mark, his staff and sub contractors take pride in this work and use high quality materials and products. I have never regretted my decision to get Mark Sheppard Bathrooms and Renovations to do my house. They made it pain-free and hassle-free.

You would be mad not to call Mark for a quote – I cannot recommend them highly enough.

Another vote for Salt renovations! Oli and his team recently renovated our main bathroom and separate toilet. We were very happy with the results and process. Oli and his team were extremely easy to work with, particularly when we had to delay our start date due to our tiles not turning up, they were very responsive to calls and questions, and great at managing issues where products we’d ordered from suppliers weren’t operating as they were supposed to. During the build, Oli or our site manager Matt would always respond to questions sent via their project collaboration system within 24 hours. Salt also did some extra work for us elsewhere in the house which was completed on time and to a high standard. One of the things I appreciated most about the whole experience was that the pricing was very transparent – the total cost came in at exactly what we’d discussed at the start of the project (minus about $500). I would gladly employ Salt again to do any future renovations.

Hannah Richardson8:53 pm 08 Sep 21

I highly recommend Oli and the team at Salt Renovations.
They did a great job remodeling our laundry to a contemporary bathroom.

A big factor in choosing Salt was trust. I felt I could trust Oli to be fair and honest, to deliver outstanding quality and to make all those tiny decisions consistent with our preferences, when we couldn’t be there. We got a number of quotes from other builders and while Salt was not the cheapest, the level of detail Oli provided convinced me that he was being the most open about all possible costs and gave us confidence in his work.

Delivering on time and budget was really important to us, as we had a baby on the way and were in a pandemic. Salt did not disappoint.

Oli provided the type of additional design advice that other builders didn’t. Ours was not a simple bathroom renovation but remodeling an old awkward laundry into a bathroom, with flow in effects for the whole house. Oli made a big effort to work with us through layout and design options before the build began. What impressed me about Oli was that he saw solutions to a tricky space where others saw problems. He was generous with his time and made sure we were choosing the right design.

Salt has great customer service. The project manager Matt went the extra mile to make sure we were happy. The team was respectful of our home and had kept us updated on progress, talking through options and providing great advice when things got tricky, as renovations often do.

Salt has a network of professionals who also provided great service and high quality products like cabinetry.

Ultimately the quality of the build was very high with great attention to detail. We are very happy.

Salt Renovations9:48 am 09 Sep 21

Dear Hannah,

Thank you so much for your kind words. This is what is all about, walking on a journey together and creating beautiful spaces that transform lives! You and Conrad were a delight to work with and I wish we could do it all over again!

Yours always,

Olivier and the Salt team

No false promises, no surprises, only quality work, a professional team and a great result. Highly recommended.

MSBR have just finished our major refit – an amazing master bedroom ensuite, new laundry and also converted an outdated bathroom/separate toilet into two bathrooms – an ensuite for a bedroom and a separate guest bathroom. Very happy with outcome.
Team were professional, reliable, courteous, Chris (site manager) was meticulous, unflappable and dependable, project management app fantastic tool while we watched from interstate, they didn’t quibble about minor rectifications at the end and worked with us until we were satisfied, great layout ideas to maximise space and cupboards in the laundry. The time I put into selecting fixtures in advance maximised our time with Angela, the MSBR interior deisgner, to work on layout and we were very impressed with the plans and images she produced. We knew immediately what the finished product would look like.
Site protection and Work Health & Safety were both done very well.
In Nov we were advised we would be first job in May and they started on 3 May – we really appreciated Mark Sheppard’s honesty about the start date and project timeline. The project timeline was on the app and on the wall in our house for everyone to see and be held accountable.
It was a total package with all trades included – MSBR subcontractors were excellent. Some other add on jobs were handled for us by them as well – with minimal hassle.
Everyone was considerate and courteous to our body corporate neighbours.
Any queries raised with Gill or Chris were dealt with quickly, politely and sensibly.
True to say Mark Sheppard has elevated a cottage industry to a professional outfit.
If you want a quality job, go to MSBR.

Thank you K and D for your kind words. We loved working with you and we are pleased that we exceeded your expectations. Our service is designed to make renovations as easy and hassle free for clients: from free interior design to professional project management and final quality inspections. We have loaded your photos on instagram https://www.instagram.com/bathroomsandrenovations/ so you can share with friends and family.

I recently had an ensuite bathroom gutted and totally remodelled. I would highly recommend Mark Sheppard Bathrooms and Renovations for three reasons: high quality ‘wow factor’ result; professional trades, project management and administration; and a diverse skilled team. While I initially thought the interior design service would not be useful to me, it turned out to be instrumental in contributing to the Geoffrey Bawa inspired design with which I could not be happier.

Mark Sheppard10:01 am 03 Aug 21

Thank you Tania. We are excited you have chosen us to renovate your other bathrooms and look forward to doing more Geoffrey Bawa inspired work with you. Our interior designers are an integral part of our business and clients always appreciate their knowledge of design and products to create beautiful spaces. We are looking forward to your next bathroom in a few weeks time. I have to agree we have a very diverse workforce as we look for the best tradespeople. Many clients are surprised to learn that we have female carpenters on our teams, our main critera for staff is professionalism and competence.

Michael Marsalek3:16 pm 19 May 21

Mark Sheppard Bathrooms and Renovations undertook my bathroom renovations for 2.5 bathrooms. From product selection to demolition and rebuild the team were professional and meticulous in every aspect of the build. I cannot be happier and the final product looks spectacular. I thoroughly recommend them and if I ever undertake this again I would engage them without hesitation. Their project management, trade expertise and skills in undertaking the build are exceptional and I commend them to anyone considering a bathroom/powder room refurb. They were brilliant.

Mark Sheppard Bathrooms did my bathroom reno in March-April ‘21. I couldn’t be happier with the results or the professionalism of this business.

Can’t recommend them highly enough.

Mark Sheppard B & R have just completed our combined bathroom/toilet/laundry renovation, which included re-doing the floor to create a wet room, installing under-floor heating, half removing an internal brick wall to create a large, bright and spacious bathroom (previously dark and dingy), new floor and wall tiles plus painted brick, and installation of all new items included lighting and electrics and a very modern sliding frosted glass door. Very happy with the final result, the workmanship from all was excellent and can’t be faulted, and the team is very well coordinated. Would highly recommend.

Tristan Juliette5:33 pm 24 Feb 21

We had the Mark Sheppard team complete a bathroom, toilet and laundry renovation after water damage led to a sinking floor causing extensive damage.

Mark Sheppard uses a project manager app. This was an extremely helpful tool which let us know what was coming up, any issues that occurred and photo updates on the project. If anything required attention, it was uploaded to the app instantly which led to minimal delays in communication.

The team working on the our renovation were punctual, caring and completed the works before the quoted 8 week due date. The finish on our reno was one of absolute quality. Styling assistance and computer generated design work was done by Angela who took the time to know our style and assisted us in a achieving our vision. Angela also went shopping with us and was flexible with timing which we really appreciated.

Chris, the project manager, was impressive throughout. From the start Chris took the upmost care of our property laying matting to protect our hardwood floors and boarded the walls to protect them also. He was always available to advise us on issues, had a great repour with his tradies and in the final stages of the reno his quality assurance and sign off on the completed works was to a very high standard.

Gill was incredibly understanding when it came to admin and accounts. Being that this was an insurance job Mark Sheppard were lenient and patient with us and the insurance company throughout.

Mark Sheppard Bathrooms and Renovations provided a quality product, a professional team to carry out the works and a modern application to keep track of the project. In 2021 we have engaged Mark Sheppard to renovate our kitchen. Can’t wait ?

Mark Sheppard agreed on 9 April 2020 that he would repair our hail-damaged skylights. We acknowledged that there was a lot of jobs needing doing in Canberra, so we were careful to not make a nuisance of ourselves in asking when the work would be done, but after making a couple of follow-up calls, and receiving no firm date, and after our insurance company asked if the six tunnels in our roof had yet been fixed, Mark finally sent a sub-contractor round in late June to look at the job. We were assured things would be fixed in “two to four weeks”. We were told this on several occasions, but nothing ever eventuated, and only was it in early August did we start with weekly calls to find out where things were at — each time there was some excuse for the delay (sub-contractors, weather, covid, lack of materials, etc.). Towards the end of August, Mark started ignoring our now-twice-weekly calls. On 31 August Mark answered one of our calls (we never once received a courtesy call from Mark to provide an update on the job), at which we pinned him down to ask if the work was going to be done at all. Mark again made a vague promise of “four to six weeks”. This provided no guarantee, so we have now decided to find a contractor who will follow-through on the promises made to complete the work, but it has left us with a compromised roof for over eight months, and now we are almost five months behind schedule in getting things fixed. If we had been told the situation from the very start, we would not have gone with Mark Sheppard. If Mark Sheppard agrees to any building work other than bathrooms, you should think twice.

Mark Sheppard7:12 pm 14 Sep 20

Hi Megan
Thank you for your feedback, we take all reviews very seriously and are sorry to hear you were not satisfied. The hail storm in January has left many Canberran’s with extensive delays in repairs. During the initial stages of Covid 19 we took on insurance work to keep our teams employed. Some of the specialised items such as skylights were on backorder for months both due to the excessive demand caused by the hail storm and shipping delays due to Covid 19. We quoted your Skylights on the 9th of April and you contacted us in May to proceed. At the time you advised you wished to go ahead I advised that there was considerable delays in materials. Complicating the delays in installation, as I explained several times, the insurance company we were contracted to had redirected us onto work they deemed more urgent and this kept filling up the schedule our insurance team. We appreciate how understanding you were and how upset and let down you feel. I must note that your roof was not compromised as it was properly sealed by the insurance company. Kind regards,
Mark Sheppard

We used Mark Sheppard from Feb to Jun 2019 for a remodel of our en-suite. Overall quality is great, support in selecting PC items was good and finish is first class. We did experience extensive delays with our vanity top, they ordered the wrong one initially. At that stage work slowed and communication was poor, leaving us with a semi finished en suite for six weeks. The final vanity top installed didn’t match our sample, which caused some grief. If you’re installing manufactured stone, make the effort and select your full piece yourself, don’t rely on samples or simply get your builder to order based on your sample. Variation should be minimal in manufactured stone but in reality it isn’t and the builder should advise of that beforehand.

l had Mark Sheppard renovate our bathroom 2018 and am completely happy. The new design is outstanding due to Mark’s creative design and everything was done to the highest quality for decent price. When Mark found the floor had a big hole in it – he replaced without any extra charge to maintain the integrity of his original quote. (that was worth $3000) We had already had our bathroom renovated in the last 10 years but the quality of the work done that time was poor. Mark did such a good job that l would recommend him 100 percent as he does things to the highest standard.

We were recommended Oli from Salt Renovations http://www.saltrenovations.com.au by the good guys down at the Bathroom Warehouse. We figured they’d see a lot of tradies and reno jobs, so we met up with Oli up and had a chat. We really liked that Oli ‘got’ exactly what my wife and I wanted without trying to ‘upsell’ or over capitalise. We also really appreciated Oli’s recommendations on what might work better or how to get more from our budget. Long story short, we used Oli for our bathroom and ensuite renovations. We liked their work so much we got Salt Renovations back a few months later to do our kitchen. They’ve got photos of their work on the website too: https://www.saltrenovations.com.au/portfolio

I found Mark Sheppard through a review on this site and chose him to renovate my ensuite. When Mark came over to look at my bathroom, he was really genuine and it was clear that he was out to make an honest living, rather than charging through the nose. Mark’s quote was comparitable with other companies but I felt like it was better value for money because he included so many little extras to ensure that I ended up with a quality bathroom. Mark and his team were prompt , polite, informative and friendly, which is important when you’re greeting tradies first thing in the morning. I am delighted with my new modern and sophisticated ensuite. I would definitely recommend Mark to anyone interested in bathroom renovations. His number is ?0405 386 594?

I can thoroughly recommend Mark Sheppard, his mobile is 0405386594 and website is http://www.bathroomsandrenovations.com.au. He provided wonderful service when the ensuite of our investment unit needed a replacement shower screen, extra towel rails, hooks and a tallboy cupboard. Not a big job but an urgent one at Christmas, the busiest time of year. We live in Adelaide and Mark’s name was one of 3 recommendations sent by email following a plea to the very helpful staff at Reece Bathroomlife at Fyshwick (ask for Mitchell or Jayde). A phone call later and Mark agreed to meet us at the unit in just 3 days’ time! He assured us he could organise the removal of the old shower screen, custom manufacture and install a new shower screen, along with extra rails/hooks and the tallboy. It would be a 3 week wait for the shower screen and the job would take a half days work. The items needed were ordered, Mark took care of accepting delivery of everything at his address and we went back to Adelaide confident we’d made the right decision. The shower screen was ready at the promised 3 weeks and Mark arranged a date for installation that gave me time to book airfares back to Canberra. True to his word the job was done between 9am and 12noon. Mark is a tradesman that is honest, reliable and provides quality service and I cannot recommend him enough.

Hi, if you haven’t already decided on a renovator then give Luke 0431135146 from Fresh Renovation and Construction a call. freshrenovation.com.au

Matt from Nu-Look did a really good job with our recent kitchen reno – good communication, knowledgeable, very professional. I believe they do bathrooms too.

We were very happy with the work and aftercare provided by Simon Gunn (http://www.gunnbuilding.com.au/)

I recently had my bathroom done and the toilet replaced in my ensuite. Mark Sheppard did the work and I can’t praise his work or his approach highly enough. Very professional and polite; always on time; comes shopping with you so that you get the right items that fit your plumbing etc. His phone number is 0405 386 594.

I got a recommendation from the RiotACT two years ago. John from Purr-fect Bathrooms was a pleasure to work with. We replaced our 1996 large ensuite. He briefed us well and sent us to his preferred bathrooms supplier – we think we got a really good deal. He turns up on time, cleans up, and he and his team were a pleasure to have around for the short time it took them to install. A few months after completion, we discovered a slow leak which we thought had something to do with the renovation. John came over that day, did in inspection, explained the problem – which was not his work, and offered to come back a few weeks later to repair the hole in the wardrobe. He was shortlisted because he likes cats, but it wasn’t the final reason we selected him!
