Ask RiotACT: Interior designers, painters, and other reno helpers

Hello all,

I’ve recently discovered how many questions renovating a home can being up. It has been a little overwhelming. So here I am in need of advice.

To start, I have a kitchen that is almost causing arguments between my husband and I. My mum had suggested an interior designer to give us another perspective. I  have no idea where to start looking, how much this is likely to cost, or whether or not it’s worth talking to a kitchen company who designs and builds them. Help?

Painters. I have rung sooo many painters and most of them are busy. I need my external timber window frames stripped and painted, as well as my door frame and bannister. I’ve gotten 2 quotes, but getting a third one is proving difficult. Does anyone have any recommendations? Hubby and I are rather anal, and we’re looking for an affordable perfectionist, so would love suggestions.

I need a builder to repair some damage to a door frame and the wall above it in my bathroom. I’m also after an affordable, reliable plumber.

I didn’t realise how much work simply finding people would be, any help would be much appreciated.

What’s Your opinion?

Belated thank you for responding. I’m a new user and didn’t know I’d gotten responses.

I recently had Jad and his team from McDebitt Painting over. They did parts of inside and also repainted the deck (which badly needed it). I was extremely happy with their professionalism, and thought they were good value for money. And reliable.

For Kitchens – it’s worthwhile taking a Saturday morning when both you and your husband are available to visit the show rooms around Mitchell and Fyshwick. Some of them will have an interior designer as part of the team who will produce drawings or 3D renders to help you visualise your vision. Pioneer Kitchens in Fyshwick are one of these businesses who offer this.

Painters – This is a really tricky time of year to source as they will be booked up until they close down for the year. If it isn’t a large job, they probably won’t even entertain it. Just use the yellow pages on this one to source a third quote.

For a Plumber – give Ross at Flow Plumbing a call.http://www.flowplumb.com.au 0450 590 030. He may have some other contacts for tradies that can help you out.
