The best plumbers in Canberra

The world’s first plumbing systems emerged around 800 years BC. Created by the Romans, aqueducts and pipes supplied water across the land to homes, wells, fountains, and bathhouses. Whilst revolutionary for its time, core principals remain in what we know as modern plumbing of today.

With water being such a vital part of our very existence, it comes as no surprise that plumbing has become a complex specialisation. Anyone who has ever experienced blocked toilet will attest to the importance of functional water and waste systems.

A typical Canberra home’s plumbing consists of an intricate system of pipes and fixtures providing clean water, the safe disposal of wastes, and much more. As plumbing systems involve personal safety, their design, implementation, and maintenance are all subject to regulation.

Whether you have a gurgling sink, blocked toilet, or poor pressure, you will need a qualified and licensed professional. And this is where your trusty plumber comes into play! Plumbers are skilled and specialised trades, experienced in all facets of domestic water and waste systems.

But don’t just hire any plumber – hire a great plumber. A plumber who will work to the highest of standards, doing so safely, effectively, and relatively affordably. And the best plumbers do it properly in the first place; avoiding expensive disasters further down the track.

We have taken the liberty of rounding up the finest plumbers in the Canberra region, along with some helpful tips to get you on your way. Read on below.

What makes a great plumber?

Great plumbers are adept and well-rounded trades, navigating water and waste systems with ease. They are masters in diagnostics, knowing where, what, and how, to resolve issues as efficiently and effectively as possible. Here is what we think separates the best plumbers from the rest:

  • Qualified, licensed & insured. When vetting your plumber this triple barrel of credentials should be at the top of your list. Firstly, the best plumbers have completed formal training and have years of experience. At a minimum, your plumber should be equipped with a certificate III in Plumbing and an industry white card. Additionally, your plumber must hold a state government issued plumbing license. Should your plumber offer ancillary services like drainage or gas, additional qualifications and licensing will also be required. Finally, ensure your plumber is covered by appropriate insurances such public liability, workers compensation or contracts cover.
  • Industry accreditation. A great way to assess your shortlisted plumber is to check on their industry accreditation. In Canberra, the Master Plumbers Association ACT is the core industry body. This membership indicates that your contractor is one of the best in the business. An important aspect of this is the adherence to ethical guidelines and industry standards.
  • Quality workmanship. Even the best products will fall short without careful hands and quality workmanship. Great plumbers believe in using only the best products and parts from reputable suppliers. They also consider their work a craft, taking meticulous care without shortcuts. We have all been there; paid for services rendered only to discover that the initial problem was still lurking. As such, look for plumbers who offer guarantees on both products, and their work.
  • Professional & transparent. The best plumbers are consummate professionals, wonderful communicators, and are upfront about services and charges. With wet infrastructure being vital to the safe occupation of any building, seek a plumber that you know will get the job done. So, look for glowing customer reviews and personal recommendations as these are often great indicators. Additionally, look for plumbers who are transparent with their quotes and timelines. Ensure your quote includes the full scope of work, material specifications, along with timeframes and any guarantees.
  • Swift service. Plumbing problems are notorious for emerging out of hours. Around the clock access and extended hours of operation help to swiftly address plumbing issues. Regardless of whether your plumbing needs are planned or a result of an emergency, seek a plumber with a fantastic record in punctuality, and prompt execution.

Important essentials to check before engaging a plumber

To ensure quality and professionalism a couple of minutes spent checking the following will help to give you peace of mind; and ensure you avoid a dodgy plumber.

  1. Confirm the provider runs a registered business through the Australian Business Registration website.
  2. Ensure the provider holds an appropriate plumbing license by checking the Access Canberra list of licensed plumbers.
  3. Check that the contractor holds a membership with a core industry body such as Master Plumbers ACT.
  4. Verify the providers public liability insurance and level of cover.
  5. Be clear on contracted inclusions, terms, and conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do plumbers charge per hour?
Per hour plumbing charges do vary and are often linked to the nature of work. Generally, you can expect to pay a service fee which ranges from $50-$150, plus an hourly rate of between $100-$175 per hour for labour only. Should you require emergency or out of hours assistance these rates could be higher.
Can I do my own plumbing work?
You’re only allowed to replace a tap washer without a license in the ACT. All other plumbing work requires a licensed plumber. If you choose to DIY and you’re caught, you will likely void your home insurance or end up facing a fine from Access Canberra. Why take the chance? Call a licensed plumber.
Do plumbers need to be licensed?
Absolutely. You’ll need a licensed plumber to legally complete all your plumbing work. In the ACT, all licensed plumbers are required to display their license number on all advertising. You can then check their number on Access Canberra's website:
When should I call an emergency plumber?
Whenever plumbing fails, it can damage your home and contents. It can also cause discomfort, or even be a major health risk to your family and even neighbours. Emergency plumbing issues can range from a toilet not flushing to a burst pipe that’s highly destructive, a failing hot water system or an overflowing sewer. Whatever the cause, you can and should call an emergency licensed plumber immediately to fix any problem.
Do I need a plumber or electrician to service my electric hot water heater?
Your best bet would be to find a fully-licensed plumber who holds a restricted electrical license as well. Your plumber can handle the majority of hot water issues with these two qualifications. Electricians are unable to gain a dual-qualification that allows them to work on the plumbing aspects of electrical appliances.

We called Ben from Rydeau Plumbing regarding a water issue in our yard. He was so helpful over the phone and someone turned up that day to assess the issue. They provided quote on the spot and came back to fix the issue within a few days. Their service was prompt, quality of work exceptional and reasonably priced. Wouldn’t hesitate to recommend.

Anthony and James from Blueline Plumbing and Gas repaired a leaking water supply pipe outside of my property. Their client service was impeccable, providing timely and sound advise and describing the tasks required even before they inspected the leak. They even suggested simple things I could do to reduce their work, and hence the final bill. They were very professional, did proper follow-up, and provided all details needed in their invoices, including photos and suggestions for maintenance. I was very happy with their work and highly recommend them.

I do not recommend The Plumbing and Electrical Doctor. I called on the Monday requesting a look at my hot water service, which I suspected needed a new element. Was told someone would be around within 2 hours. On Tuesday morning a plumber arrived and declared that my whole system was on the way out and gave me 3 quotes. I decided to get a further opinion, and the plumber I contacted today told me it was the element/heater, arrived with the parts, and had the hot water running again in less than 2 hours. I saved $1600 by not listening to The Plumbing and Electrical Doctor. The call out fee was very reasonable, however, at $49.

I have used Definitive plumbing before, the guy that owns it was who came out. He was very nice and professional and much cheaper than other people who quoted me off this website

Thanks to the review on this site I found Andrew McReynolds Plumbing. I had a blocked drain and Andrew was able to assist me in a timely and professional manner. Andrew has great customer skills, is willing to assist and his rates are very reasonable. I can highly recommend him.

I am rapt that I found Andrew McReynolds Plumbing. I had tree roots in a pipe and read the reviews here but couldn’t tell which ones were legit. Believe me when I say that Andrew was a godsend. He was skilled and good natured and very reasonably priced for what was a murky and time consuming job. I highly recommend him. And that’s legit.

Avoid at all costs the following, they are all the basically same company:
Canberra Blocked Drain Services
Canberra Emergency Hot Water Solutions
Canberra Hot Water Systems and Repairs
Canberra Solar Hot Water Solutions
P1 Plumbing and Electrical Services
Priority One Plumbing and Electrical Services
North Canberra Plumbing
Roof Plumbing Canberra
Sam’s Local Plumbing
Tuggeranong Plumbing
Your Local Plumber ACT

Smart website, call centre, and charged me over $13k for work which they said would take over a week, and ended up taking barely three days with downtime. Manager got threatening and aggressive when I questioned the bill. Awful.

    roberts roberts 9:38 pm 16 Oct 19

Yep avoid Tuggeranong Plumbing at any cost.

Jill Farrelly Jill Farrelly 9:17 pm 20 Feb 20

Canberra Blocked Drains charged me $2300 for 4 1/2 hours work. They did seem to get to the bottom of the problem but the quote the fix it is eye-watering. I will not be asking them back.

+1 for Running Plumbing. Damien is excellent – professional, trustworthy, reasonable and quick. Definitely should be in the best plumber lists 🙂

Rocan Rocan 8:21 am 22 Jan 19

Absolutely appalled by Priority One. We lost hot water, called them out, and were quoted $1100 for a fix that may not last long in their words, or $4500 to replace the whole system. Time for another quote, Spencer and Sons came out, replaced the thermostat for $200, job done. Priority One are charlatans, stay clear.

We Just used Duncan’s Plumbing to repair a disconnected sewage pipe. They were prompt, communicative, efficient, friendly and did a beautiful job. Their invoice was the most comprehensive I’ve ever seen, describing and itemising the work in detail. I’ll be employing them again within a month for more work that we need doing. Fantastic job

Check out the guys from “Emergency Plumbers Canberra”
They answered promptly arrived quickly and took a reasonable price.

Running Plumbing (Damian Peacock) is the plumber with the mostest. He responded quickly,
and was very honest and reliable. The price was right, and he made sure the problem was fixed before we paid. Can’t recommend him highly enough.

I would not recommend priority one plumbing. The plumber was 1 hour late (told us to come between 10am – 2pm, came at 3pm), and he did fix the problem (leaky tap). The pricing system though, is very “confusing” or should I say tricky, my impression is they still charge the same whether you used the “coupon” or not. They tell you higher price if you asked to use the coupon anyways. Conclusion: they can probably fix problems but customers are definitely note their priority and they try to trick you and charge more. I read this article and went with priority one, but regretting it. I would stick with my local plumber from next time.

robplm robplm 11:08 pm 16 Dec 17

I would not recommend priority one plumbing for clearing roots from drains. I had them in and they were unsuccessful ($420 for nothing) and suggested replacing everything. I instead called capital city plumbing who had no trouble clearing drain and for less than half the price. ($187)

    Frustrated Frustrated 10:34 am 09 Jan 18

I used them recently was charged for 3 1/2 hrs Labour and a piece of copper pipe, $1234.00

When i asked for an itemised invoice, I got the following response in email.

“Our organisation has a lot more involved than just the hours on site. Planning and set up and material orders management etc

The prices account for all these things so a can provide a quality service with quality trades”

I think the franchise owner thought he could take advantage of someone desperate for plumbing services early in the new year.

Product review website suggests this company has some history of overcharging and bad work.

Bob303 Bob303 11:25 am 27 Nov 17

Damian Peacock from Running Plumbing is great. We have used him twice now over five years. He is easily contactable by phone or email, returns our calls and emails, attends and fixes our problems very promptly, and goes to some trouble rescheduling other jobs to sort our problems out. We are very impressed with him. Next time we need a plumber, he’s it!

Anthony from Blueline plumbing and Gas. Extremely high attention to details, is clean and reliable and very transparent as to what he does and your options (including the costs associated with each and his recommendations). Would recommend every time. Website is

Thank you RiotACT for saving the day with this good list.

I wish I had checked out the list a bit earlier.

The tap connected to the hose was a bit shaky and I was probably waiting for a disater to happen.

The disaster never happened as i got David to the resuse, Nice guy, did a good job and was econimical

I would surely recommend him to be added to the list as well. – Thank you google !

My 2 cents.

Mark at Tap Doctor reliable, reasonably priced, tidy and on time. Forget ” Your Local Plumber” unless you want to take out a second mortgage.
