The responsible removal of bulk waste from a residential property can be a challenging process. There are many legal, regulatory, environmental and financial factors to consider when choosing how to dispose of unwanted material that is either too large for regular curbside waste collection or comprises prohibited matter.

If you are simply clearing your backyard or garage, moving house or undertaking home renovations, hiring a skip bin or organising a professional company to arrange the safe disposal of materials is often the most practical solution.

Within the Canberra region, there are many companies that specialise in effective rubbish removal, catering for whatever items need to go. Whether it be general household waste, building materials, green matter, or hazardous substances such as asbestos, oils or chemicals, your requirements can be met in cost-effective ways that adhere to environmental regulations.

We asked our readers from Canberra and the surrounding region to share their experiences with leading skip bin hire and rubbish removal companies. Below, you will find a recommended list of reputable business that can cater to your bulk waste needs. If you are not sure what you are looking for, the following checklist should help you decide which trustworthy waste-removal professional is for you.

What to look for when hiring a skip bin

  • A wide range of skips. Everyone’s waste needs are different so it is important to choose a waste removal company that boasts a full range of skip bins. You may only require a small bin for household material, whereas someone else might be undertaking major building or renovation work, or landscaping. Choosing a company that has a large range of options, each at different price points, might be best as they can make suggestions on the skip size that best meets your requirements – that way you only pay for space you actually need.
  • Competitive pricing. There are many dependable waste removal companies throughout the ACT so finding one that will provide what you need for a reasonable price should be the easy part. Most skip bin and rubbish removal companies provide pricing plans on their website. It’s worth shopping around to find a skip that falls within your budget.
  • Reliable delivery and pickup. Knowing you can rely on the skip to arrive and then be collected on scheduled days gives you peace of mind when beginning a large-scale renovation project, purging unwanted goods or simply moving house. If you’re on a tight schedule, you want assurance that your skip will be there from the time you are paying for it.
  • Hidden costs: Make sure you know exactly what you can place in your skip bin. Some companies may charge extra for materials such as concrete, toxic substances and car tyres.
  • Generous weight allowances. Most waste disposal companies have weight allowances on their skips. It is pretty standard for costs to be incurred for exceeding these limits so make sure you know what your limit is and how much you will be charged if you exceed it. Some companies offer no-weight flat rates so shop around for one of these if you are anticipating a heavy load.
  • Availability. Believe it or not, skips can be hot, in-demand items. Sometimes you might have to wait a couple of weeks for a skip in a particular size to become available. But waiting isn’t always an option so if you need one yesterday, you need to find a company with skips available right now.
  • Responsible practices. Adherence to strict laws and regulations regarding the removal and treatment of waste material is crucial to ensure you are dealing with an ethical local business that values its environmental responsibility.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get rid of hazardous materials such as paints, chemicals, oils and asbestos?
Most general waste skip bins prohibit the inclusion of toxic materials such as chemicals, paints, oils and insulation materials. If you have such items needing disposal, it is recommend they be taken to a specialist Canberra drop-off facility. It is also recommended that electronic waste be dropped off at these facilities so it can be recycled. Small amounts of asbestos from domestic sources can also be dropped off by appointment, although significant asbestos removal work must always be carried out by a licensed practitioner. You must never put this material in hired skip bins.
Can I hire a skip bin just for green waste?
Absolutely. If you have green waste that exceeds the volume of regular curbside bins, there are many Canberra skip hire and trash pak companies that either specialise in the removal of plant matter, or can provide bins for this purpose. There are still usually restrictions on the size of items – including branches and tree trunks – but most garden waste is usually accepted.
Should I put bricks and concrete into a hired skip bin?
For significant renovation and building work, a specialist concrete and brick skip bin is recommended, especially one of which a weight limit does not apply. Some general waste bins can accept such heavy materials, however if there is a weight limit on your general skip bin, bricks and concrete will soon push it over and you could be facing additional expense.
Can I use a skip bin to dispose of household e-waste and whitegoods?
You can dispose of household whitegoods in most general waste skip bins. However, it is recommended you first seek out recycling services to see if they can take away your unwanted fridge, freezer or washing machine. Electronic waste, such as televisions and appliances, can also go in general skip bins, but dropping them off at an e-waste facility should be the first consideration, if possible, so they can be recycled.
Can I hire a skip bin long-term?
The standard length of skip bin hire in Canberra is three to seven days. However, should you seek to hire a skip for longer, some local companies can arrange extensions. For smaller waste requirements, such as green matter and light rubbish, trash paks that are regularly serviced by some companies are a handy solution.

I spoke to the owner/operator of Betta Bins this morning to try and book in a skip bin hire for early next week and he was rude and beyond unhelpful. Offered no alternate options, just said ‘can’t help ya sorry’ and hung up. Not sure why they ended up on the list of best skip bin companies to use in Canberra. Disgraceful customer service and will tell everyone we know not to use this company ever.

Brindabella Waste Company - I have a trash pack from them and it's in my top ten best ideas ever. They will come to collect and if it's not even half full, they will leave it and send an email saying no collection, no charge as it wasn't full. One off fee for this size trash pack. Happy, happy and happy.

Stupid question time, when they say $190 for three days hire is that just for the bin and they charge you extra for what you put into the bin? Also can you put mixed waste into the one bin i.e greenery and house building materials left over from a renno? TIA.

Gareth Rowlands Gareth Rowlands 10:44 am 22 Apr 20

Ken Owers No that's all included. Each bin come with a weight limit though. You'll pay extra if you go over that weight. If you have mixed waste companies like cut price skips will advise you split them up. For example instead of a 4m skip, get 2x2m skips - one for Reno material the other for green waste.

Cut price skips are the best hands down, my family run various maintenance businesses and we use them on a regular basis. The team are friendly and accommodating to changes is circumstances and don’t require much notice for extensions

It would be useful if you could hire a skip bin for a month at a reduced rate. We are doing a mega clean out during iso, but it’s obviously taking more than a week to get through almost 20 yers of accumulated stuff. We’ve just had a skip (from Cut Price Skips), and it would have been handy to have it for another 2 weeks (but at $100 extra on top of the almost $300 for the initial hire) it wasn’t affordable. The skip got picked up only about 2/3 full.

Sher Young Sher Young 11:54 pm 21 Apr 20

Belinda Napier you could keep doing the declutter, put all the stuff in an area then order the skip. Probably a pan to double handle things...let alone the temptation of reclaiming something 🥴

Belinda Napier Belinda Napier 12:09 am 22 Apr 20

Sher Young that was what caused this initial build up haha... and then a second pile here.. third one there.. a whole home office full! Plus it has taken a while to jump start the huspain into action and he only has the weekends to work through the garage full of his junk.

Bec Eyley Bec Eyley 5:44 am 22 Apr 20

Belinda Napier you can buy pink skip bags from Bunnings, take as long as you like to fill them, then call the company to come pick them up.

    They are fantastic.

Just used BettaBins and the bin got delivered the day after booking it and no hidden costs - it was a fixed cost (very reasonable) and much better than other companies we have used in the past which cost a fortune.
