I spoke to the owner/operator of Betta Bins this morning to try and book in a skip bin hire for early next week and he was rude and beyond unhelpful. Offered no alternate options, just said ‘can’t help ya sorry’ and hung up. Not sure why they ended up on the list of best skip bin companies to use in Canberra. Disgraceful customer service and will tell everyone we know not to use this company ever.

I just had a bin from cut price, brilliant, will price match anyone else and beat there price quite well.

I had a bin for 7 days, although I filled it up after 3, rang them up, they came and picked it up the next, was brilliant. 4cubic meters is a big bin as well.

with our never ending renovations, we’ve used a number of companies and not had a problem with any. Of more general advice: you will almost always need a bigger skip than you ever thought you would, pack your skip to maximise space usage (flat things at the bottom etc.), for bigger skips get one that has a door that opens.

Not only are Capital Waste Skips apparently awful to absolutely everyone, but they are also terrible at posting fake recommendations for themselves. 7 months after the last post and suddenly two users with similarly structured handles appear within 9 minutes of each other singing their praises with almost identical wording? Here’s a challenge: come up with any possible way they could have been more obvious about it.

I agree, I recently hired from Capital waste skips and found them to be great, My skip was delivered on time and the driver was very helpful. I would suggest them to anyone.

This appears to be a Utah based company ? If they can make it to Canberra in one hour, that really is exceptional service !

Ring them up, well you can keep the bin until Wednesday, doesnt matter that I work during the week so that would be no good, the response, “Well, I told you I am a driver down, either take it an extra day, or we wont deliver it.”

Hmm sends a clear message about their customer service.

I second that, ACT Skip Hire – good customer service via the phone, arrived and picked up on time…even managed to plant it on an awkward slope under a big gumtree (the only space we had available).

There used to be an ad (for floodlights, I think) on local TV where this was acted out superbly. I do miss that ad. I loved the bit where the lights activated and the neighbours were sprung, and scattered like rabbits.

I also recommend Skippy Bins and warn you to stay clear of Capital Waste Skips. Never delivered it on time nor did they pick it up when they should have. Was a thread about bins ages ago on Riot and others had similar experiences.

I had a poor experience with Capital Waste Skips. The bin was delivered on the day that is was promised and they deducted the full amount from my credit card that same day. The bin was meant to be collected after 7 days, but this did not occur. I called the company 5 times over the next 3 weeks asking for it to be removed (with each call I was told that “it would be collected tomorrow”), but it was only when I threatened escalation to the Department of Fair Trading that it was collected without any apology or explanation. I won’t be using them again.

Everyone seems to be about the same price in Canberra so comes down to service and who has bins available. I used Tiger Waste (tigerwaste.com.au) most recently – online ordering + next-day delivery – very handy for those of us that aren’t forward planners!

Depending on the quantity of rubbish you have to get rid of, you might be better off finding a mate with a ute and doing a couple of $20 tip runs than spending a couple of hundred on a skip.

I used Cut Price Skips last week and they were excellent. The bin that I got, the rear folded down so I did not have to lift anything heavy up and over. They delivered the bin within 2 hours of me ringing and they were reasonably cheep. 1300 884 180

Because going to yellowpages looking for rubbish removal wont tell you that you can contact freecycle, revolve, ezyscrap, corkhill bros, etc. to get rid of your stuff for free, and reduce your costs.. their sole interest is in connecting you with someone (but only someone who has paid them) who will take your money to do the service. yellowpages will tell you of a computer rubbish collection business, but wont tell you about charity computers, for example, which RA will.

Woody – pretty much anything you want as long as it’s not hazardous or toxic ie not asbestos

taninaus – as taninaus said the Yellow Pages is bit of a lottery. I hate when you do a search under Canberra and it brings up results from interstate.

Woody, you can put most things in, but some stuff costs extra – eg bricks and concrete are extra. You also can’t normally put stuff into a skip that would cost you extra to take to the tip yourself, stuff like computers, car tyres, hazardous waste etc. Green waste is ok, but you can’t get rid of soil. Apart from that, pretty much anything goes.

‘Can you put in skips’, even.

What sort of stuff in you put in skips? Concrete? Gyprock? Green waste?

Don’t hold your breath on a çouncil clean up day here – they might have hinted during the election but there was a definitive noway from the chief recently.

BD84 – yellow pages is like a secret raffle – you cant be sure what you will get or if they even show. Recommendations from people here is a little more reliable.

Sort out whats there, and you can probably get rid of a lot of it for free. Scrap metal and similar items (even whole whitegoods) can be collected for free (you might even get paid). Any usable furniture you can call the Salvos or possibly groups like revolve.

Once youve whittled it down to just ‘rubbish’, find a friend with a ute and/or trailer and take it to the tip or call for a skip. A tip-trip will cost you $20 per load and a skip will cost about $100 (last time we used one anyway). You could also ask any of your neighbours if they have anything to get rid of and share in the cost of a rubbish skip.

Get a skip/mini skip. They plonk it on your nature strip then remove it laden with your rubbish, well what your neighbourhood don’t plunder from it while it sits there anyway

Ah, therein lies a tale . . . I’ve been waiting since 1999 (when I moved back to Canberra) for a ‘Council Clean up’ type of hard rubbish collection. Everywhere else I’ve ever lived has one. Queanbeyan has one. We don’t have one . . . yet.

BUT . . .we were promised one about 18 months ago by the Chief Minister, but so far, nothing. I already have a pile awaiting the day . . . an old BBQ, a broken computer chair and a few other unreuseable items.

Alternative plans include paying a rubbish removals person, breaking everything up into teeny tiny pieces and putting it in the normal rubbish, or hiring a trailer to get it to the tip (and paying $$$$ to dump it).

TVs will cost you extra. AFAIK you aren’t allowed to dump them in landfill anymore.

I would recommend getting a skip delivered to your house and filling it up. I will be doing this shortly as part of moving out of my house in Fisher. Some of the skip companies will take care of the TV disposal problem for you, though of course they will pass on the disposal charge ($25+ per TV/computer monitor last time I got rid of some)

Lioncom in Fyshwick will also take and recycle/dispose of TVs/monitors and other electronic goods. They do offer a pickup service but again it incurs extra charges; have used it to get rid of heavy/cumbersome old stuff at work. Recommended.

A few years ago we used Brindabella Rubbish Removable, who we found in the Yellow Pages. He picked everything up in an extra large caged trailer. Would use him again. Googling found a website for Brindabella Waste Comapny, can anyone confirm it’s the same mob?
Double check about the tv, I believe there’s a new rule about the disposal of those.
Is the old desk really past repairing/rejuvenating? It never ceases to amaze me what that girl on BH&G (Tara?) does with the most unlikely stuff. I was interested to see a few months ago what broken bits of furniture she got at her local Salvo’s that our mob wouldn’t take. One broken but fixable drawer made them reject an item of ours. Maybe there aren’t enough Tara’s in Canberra?

just hire one of those rent-a-skips. costs about $100 and you have to help the driver load the stuff (or pay extra if the loading takes more than 10 minutes or so. but its fast and (relatively) easy.
