Canberra the new Baghdad?

By WozI 26 June 2007 7

ACT Police are investigating a car explosion in Ainslie this morning to determine if its owner has been deliberately targeted.
Police have confirmed commercial grade explosives were placed under the car before it was detonated in Cobb Crescent about 5:30 this morning.
The underbelly of the car’s been badly damaged.
The street was cordoned off for the bomb squad and a forensic team to collect evidence.
“We have no evidence to suggest this particular person was specifically targeted but obviously we don’t discount anything,” Detective Sergeant Chris Sheehan said.
Police say no one was injured, but concede it could have been extremely serious.
Police are speaking to neighbours and want anyone with information to contact them.

Now what the hell is a commercial grade explosive?

[ED (Ntp) – is now informing us that it was a ACT Government registered vehicle.]

I was breastfeeding my baby at 5.26am that morning, two blocks away when it went off. I am very surprised if it only damaged the underbelly of the car. It shook my house and rattled all my windows.

you would think that they would at least go to the trouble of attaching it to the fuel tank before letting it off…

So that’d be like ANFO, gelignite? Not Semtex or C4. Still – I didn’t think I was hearing right when I heard it was in Ainslie on the TV last night!

And apparently only good for damaging the underbelly of the car and not, for example, the whole car.

Maybe someone’s been watching too many mafia type movies?

As well as being non military.

Now what the hell is a commercial grade explosive?

I.e. something purchased, not something whipped up in a bathtub.

According to the ABC TV news report, when they talk about ‘commercial grade explosive’, they’re talking about the explosives used in mining and farming (eg for clearing tree stumps)
