What do ancient arts, bush dancing, film buffs, ukulele, scrabble and cartooning have in common? They’re all alive and well in Canberra, they’re inclusive of all ages and all abilities, and they’re all represented at the inaugural Connect and Participate Expo which will be held at the Kingston Markets this Saturday the 29th of March.

The Connect and Participate Expo is an opportunity for everyone to connect with the Canberra community, to meet new people and try new things. The Expo is the first of its kind in the ACT and brings together 90 groups representing sport and recreation, arts and crafts, music, leisure, cultural activities, performing arts, hobbies and special interest groups.

The event has been organized in partnership between Belconnen Community Service (BCS), Woden Community Service (WCS) and the Community Development team at Disability ACT.

Dira Horne, CEO of BCS, says, “Canberrans love to connect with each other but sometimes we don’t know the huge range of options available. For some people, such as those living with disability, it can be even more daunting because it’s not always easy to tell whether there are barriers to participation in any given group or activity. There are so many diverse and inclusive groups in Canberra and it’s great to be able to give them an opportunity to showcase their talents and open up their groups to new members.”

The Expo will run from 11am to 4pm and entry is free. There will also be free Action Bus transport operating to and from the Expo. See: www.connectandparticipateexpo.com.au for the bus route.

And, for anyone wanting to learn more about the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS), there will be information stalls and experts on hand to talk about the NDIS and what it means for the ACT.

See performances by The Rugby Choir, The Cashews, Capoeira Senzala Australia, Storytellers, Jumptown Swing and more. Attend free workshops and demonstrations. Sample edible delights from a range of food stalls. Try something you’ve never tried before. The Expo is a fun and friendly opportunity to meet, greet and eat!
