Halloween’s just around the corner, so warm up your engines and lock your doors because there’s a great program of scary movies on offer from Mov’in Car drive-in this week.

Canberra’s public art biennial Contour 556 continues with a symposium at the Canberra Theatre on the legacy and future of making art in the public domain in Canberra on Thursday, and Thunderstone at the Dwelling on Springbank Island on Sunday.

Plant lovers have an opportunity on Saturday to swap plants with other gardeners in Molonglo as Communities @ Work hosts a Plant Swap, while on Sunday all the Thomas the Tank Engine fans can visit the Canberra Miniature Railway for a ride to the top of the hill on the five-inch gauge Yerrabi line through the tunnel.

Join Menslink for their annual Business Breakfast with guest speaker Georgeina Whelan live from the Region Media studio on Tuesday, and don’t miss Watch Your Wellness hosted by Woden Community Service on Friday as part of Mental Health Month.

Music lovers will welcome the return of the ANU Orchestra with musicians from the Canberra Symphony Orchestra at Llewellyn Hall on Wednesday.

If you love getting together with friends over a glass of wine, feel creative, and you’re a massive Harry Potter fan, head to Assembly on Monday for a social painting session where Hogwarts meets Van Gogh, and for those of you wanting to move your body, head out to Stromlo Forest Park on Tuesday and start learning the proper way to ride your mountain bike safely.

On Thursday, AustCyber will be holding the second national missing persons hackathon, with real cases to work on, in conjunction with the Australian Federal Police. No experience is necessary to join the hackathon, so get a team together and compete, and bring missing people home to their families.

No experience is necessary. If you can Google, have searched for people through social media, you can help! As a bonus, you’ll be automatically registered for an online self-paced OSINT Foundational program to give you the basics and help you understand your digital footprint.

If you see yourself as an ‘online investigator’, ‘cyber hacker’, or a ‘cyber sleuth’, then this is the event for YOU!

Where: The Playhouse, Canberra Theatre Centre
When: 4:30 pm and 6:30 pm
Cost:
$20, bookings essential. Tickets available through Canberra Theatre Centre.

Session one: Canberra has a history of being the stage for the presentation of challenging contemporary art practice in the public domain. A panel of artists and curators review the legacy and significance of some of these projects including Australia’75 and the parallel program Sculpture 75, Acts I II III, a series of performance and public participatory art events instigated and organised by Ingo Kleinert and Diana Ashcroft Johnson from 1978 to 1982 and the National Sculpture Forums of 1995 and 1998.

Session two: The panel reflects on the challenges and importance of delivering a regional contemporary art festival, the new fashion for temporary pavilions as ‘architectural art’ and some of the considerations for artists on making their work and exhibiting in temporary art events. What have been the impacts on the growing climate of risk aversion and the uncertain culture of the pandemic changing what temporal art projects can say? Will ambitious temporal contemporary art events survive?
