Multiple car fires cause evacuation of Belconnen residents

Residents of a unit block in Belconnen were evacuated early this morning (14 March) following several car fires in the ground level carport.

ACT Fire and Rescue and police arrived at about 6:45 am at the block of units in Disney Court, Belconnen following reports of multiple vehicles on fire.

Three cars were located alight and ACT Fire and Rescue extinguished the fires. Specialists are assessing the units for structural and smoke damage.

One person was assessed at the scene and was transported to hospital in a stable condition.

All other residents of the units were evacuated and accounted for.

Police have begun an investigation into the circumstances of the fires.

Firefighters have also conducted atmospheric monitoring of the building.

Crews will remain on scene for some time conducting follow up operations, the community is asked to avoid the area.
