Because it’s a confusing design – you can only exit to the right of the circle by stopping mid-way at a traffic light, whereas with any other type of circle you have right-of-way when you’re on it.

In total if you include the cost of all the crashes that have happened since the lights went in it would have been cheaper to have cut the circle down to a square or rectangle as part of the conversion to traffic lights.

Either that or kept it as a roundabout with part time signals on all directions.

It’s further confusing because the arrows actually direct traffic to turn into the oncoming traffic (should have used ‘oblique’ arrows to indicate turn ahead, and then the regular arrows at the point of turning – the designers apparently didn’t understand ‘oblique’ arrows, and the contractors were apparently too lazy to query the design)

It’s further confusing because the arrows actually direct traffic to turn the wrong way, into oncoming traffic (should have used ‘oblique’ arrows to indicate turn ahead, and then the regular arrows at the turn)

The type of collision is not stated, so what factors apply can only be speculated on. Maintenance is another factor. Parts of lane markings for example, are almost non-existent, which could easily result in collisions from lane intrusions.

How do people still crash at a roundabout they attempted to idiot proof by putting traffic lights in?

StuartM has explained that pretty well

“Because many people are stupid and confused by simple things” is the correct answer. Any time you try to idiot proof something, our constant hampering of natural selection provides a

A colleague came through the day it opened and complained people were driving up the wrong way… I eventually drove through it months later and thought “of course they did, that’s where the road markings are directing them!”

Because they make the same mistake you did and consider it a roundabout! It’s no longer a roundabout despite looking like one. It’s rather several discrete intersections close together.
