1. Death in Mawson:
- ACT Policing is investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a man whose body was found in scrubland near Athllon Drive, Mawson February 28.
ACT Ambulance officers attended the scene around 6pm, when they found the man deceased. Police were called and immediately cordoned off an area of scrubland between Athllon Drive and the Southlands shopping area.
The man, aged in his 30s but whose identity is not yet confirmed, was found lying in a small clearing within the scrub. He was wearing blue jeans, a white T-shirt and thongs.
At this time, police are treating the death as suspicious.
AFP Forensic Services were called to the scene and undertook an intensive examination of the area.
Police are appealing for any witnesses who may have seen a man wearing blue jeans, a white T-shirt and thongs walking in the general area of the Southlands shopping area in Mawson.
- ACT Policing is seeking witnesses to an aggravated robbery in Acton Friday, February 27 in which a 21-year-old Victorian man was threatened and robbed.
Around 10.15pm, the victim was walking east along Ward Rd, when he noticed two men loitering nearby. The victim crossed the road but the two men followed him. He then attempted to evade them by running but one of the men tackled him to the ground and threatened him while the other covered the victim’s eyes and stole a sum of cash and a black Apple iPod from the victim’s pocket.
The offenders then left the area, heading south along Daley Rd. The victim was not injured.
Police, including an SRS K9 team, conducted a search of the area but failed to locate the offenders.
One of the offenders is described as a white Caucasian male, wearing a T-shirt and shorts. The second was described as a white Caucasian male, about 5’6” tall (165cm), with a slim build, a brown beard, and wearing a T-shirt and shorts.
Police are appealing for any witnesses who may have seen suspicious persons or activity in the areas of Daley Rd or Ward Rd Acton last night to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
- ACT Policing is questioning a 16-year-old Gilmore youth in relation to an incident in Tuggeranong early Sunday, March 1 in which a male was allegedly threatened with a handgun.
Police were called to an address in May Maxwell Crescent, Gilmore, around 4.45am today where it is alleged that, after an argument between residents and a youth outside an address in the street, the youth returned a short time later and threatened a 26-year-old male with a handgun.
Specialist Response and Security team members were called and police established a tactical cordon around the immediate area, restricting pedestrian and traffic movement to the street.
Around 8.15am, a person of interest – the 16-year-old youth currently in custody – walked from a residence in May Maxwell Crescent and surrendered peacefully to police. A search warrant was obtained and a search conducted on the residence where a handgun was found hidden in the roof cavity.
The illegal firearm will be forensically examined.
The youth will be held in the Regional Watch House overnight. He will be charged with threats to kill, threats to commit grevious bodily harm, and firearms offences. He will appear in the ACT Children’s Court tomorrow.
