ACT Policing is investigating a serious assault at the Alexander Maconochie Centre (AMC) on Sunday morning (27 January).

Police were called in when a 27-year-old male inmate punched another male inmate in the face, causing serious injuries.

The injured inmate was conveyed to The Canberra Hospital where he underwent emergency surgery. ACT Policing’s Criminal Investigations (CI) team is conducting further investigations into the incident.

We now have news that the prisoner who bashed a convicted paedophile in Canberra’s jail has been sentenced to six-and-a-half years behind bars.

http://www.canberratimes.com.au/act-news/more-jail-for-man-who-bashed-paedophile-in-prison-20130717-2q3r7.html

The crimes could at least get Ian King’s age right. He was born in 1943 which would make him either 69 or 70 not 60..

That’s a somewhat broad statement. It’s mainly in their upbringing rather than their DNA. But your point stands – Human Rights compliance on its own isn’t going to change an offender’s behaviour.

No, they got it right.

If you’re referring to the Minister’s comments as reported here http://www.canberratimes.com.au/act-news/protected-prisoner-not-deliberately-in-same-area-as-alleged-attacker-20130130-2djq6.html no he doesn’t say that. And I heard the interview on radio yesterday morning. He certainly implied they shouldn’t have been in the same area, but there could be other reasons for that than that other than them being of different Protection categories. It also could just be a judgement made with the benefit of hindsight. Unfortunately the investigation has been handed over to the AFP so we may eventually find out, if they pursue a prosecution. If they don’t, then we may never know.

IP

Good point vg – the ACT prison is a bit ‘special’.

(And, I refuse to call it a ‘centre’ without some kind of qualifying word, as that is weasel wording, like ‘resource management centre’ for what is commonly known as the tip.)

It was a pedophile who was assulted .. If you ask me he deserves everything he gets!

I assume you’re talking about compensation?

Regardless of the offences for which he is incarcerated, he’s entitled to safety. And for the neanderthals who believe that prison is the place where those who deserve it get assaulted, how does this help anyone’s rehabilitation? How does this make them better people when they return to our community?

And what about the perpetrators of prison violence? If you condone (or applaud) the assault of a person because of their offending, then surely you also turn a blind eye to those who are their assailants. How does perpetrating violence on “those who deserve it” whilst in prison affect a person’s likelihood of rehabilitation if that person has a history of violent offences? Will bashing an offender make the basher a better person when they return to the community?

And what about the costs to the community? Not only is it already very expensive to incarcerate an offender, but the community now has to stump up the costs of medical treatment (the bloke might lose an eye) and potentially also the costs of compensation.

Still think a prison bashing is a great idea for those who “deserve it”?

If the other prisoner had finished the job we’d have no issue with compensation and no worries about this scumbag getting out.

But those who you’d have finishing the job would have to be released sooner or later. And what would they have learnt about society’s expectations of them?

Would they have learnt that it’s OK to break the law by committing acts of violence and murder if you think you have justification or if the law is an inconvenient obstacle to the outcome you think is best?

Is that the belief system you really what prisoners re-entering society with?

Should the bloke who king hit him without warning or provocation, inflicting an injury that will cost him an eye, be punished for that assault occasioning grievous bodily harm? Or by condoning the bashing, do you pardon his attacker?

What about when his attacker is released from prison? Do you then expect him to have learnt that violence is not acceptable? How?

Mr King was sentenced not very long ago, but had spent years on remand, so someone’s calculation of his parole eligibility is way off the mark.

Nasty stuff. It’s pretty hard to expect crims to change if we’re going to condone this kind of behaviour.

Seems he’s nothing like he was then given he got his face rearranged. The other guy wasn’t carted off the TCH with him.

And yes I condone bashings of rock spiders in prisons, to the person who raised the “counter-arguments”.

A few things stink about this incident… If the bloke is a rockspider, he should not have been at the clinic at the same time as mainstream inmates (presence of officers or not). The question is, did the administration give the OK to do so to save time (and therefore money) by only having one medical/methadone parade? Did individual officers decide to take a shortcut rather than conduct separate escorts?

Was the assault ‘arranged’ by the victim to ensure an early parole and some setting up again money by way of victims compo?

(I have no answers, I just hope the right questions get asked.) Looks to me like Corrections ACT is more than capable of running a safe and well controlled syringe exchange what???
O, and Comic and gamer_nerd, I can assure you that Methadone does get shared quite frequently… sometimes by way of a bit of foam or apple under the tongue when undergoing ‘supervised’ dosing, or by the threat of an utter flogging if the recipient doesn’t vomit it back up. (It’s then strained, watered down and re-swallowed by the stand-over man/woman or on-sold for tobacco/head jobs/ or favors involving violence.

Source?

Why is this even news? A shitbag punches another shitbag in prison – who cares?

One eyed monster

I thought the rock spiders were kept away from the mainstream prisoners? This will cost the ACT government a fortune when Jack Pappas, our very own ‘celebrity’ lawyer gets hold of it.

Well according to the Crimes

King was jailed in June 2012 for 12 years for sexually abusing young boys in the 1980s and 1990s. ‘The 69-year-old former Queensland fast bowler claimed he abused the boys to make them better athletes and to help prepare them for manhood.’

How magnanimous of him and to top it off the POS will be eligible for parole in 2016,a whole 8 years before his total sentence!

A scumbag to be sure but everything he gets will likely amount to a payout if he was indeed there with the other prisoners when he wasn’t supposed to be.

Remember this is the ACT with our wonderful human rights compliant prison. If a con in Victoria can get a six figure payout after falling out of a bunk bed in his cell I would imagine this particular gentleman will soon be rolling in it.
