It is alleged a Mercedes-Benz was stolen from northern Canberra before a police officer was assaulted during the attempt to arrest the men later seen inside the vehicle.
ACT Policing said a white Mercedes Benz S400 was allegedly stolen from a residence in Gungahlin early on Sunday morning (8 December).
Then, at about 10:35 pm that night, police officers saw the Mercedes parked in O’Connor with three men inside it.
Police told the men to get out, but the trio allegedly forcefully pushed past the officers and took off on foot.
It is alleged one of them also hit a police officer in the face in order to evade arrest.
Police soon found a 19-year-old, who is alleged to have hit the officer, in the backyard of a nearby property.
He was charged with driving a motor vehicle without consent and assaulting a police officer.
Meanwhile, a 31-year-old man, who is also alleged to have been in the Mercedes, was found hiding in a shed. He was charged with riding in a motor vehicle without consent.
A police spokesperson said the third man alleged to have been in the car was yet to be located.
“Investigations are ongoing in relation to the incident, and further charges are anticipated,” the spokesperson said.
