Canberra removalists

As exciting as beginning this new chapter in your life is, there’s no denying that moving house is a huge job. Whether you’re down-sizing or up-sizing, staying local or moving across town, moving house can be one of the most involved and potentially stressful things you can do, as you find yourself juggling details like changes of postal address, purchasing your boxes, packing strategically, and figuring out exactly what it is you want to bring with you to your new home. Luckily, Canberra’s removalists are here to help you throughout this process.

Hiring a removalist is a great way to make your moving day far less daunting. Maybe you don’t have a way of safely moving a large dining table, or perhaps making multiple trips to move all of your boxes to your new home would require far too much petrol. Having a professional take care of the these logistical issues for you means that you can relax on this exciting and important day. But what qualities should you look for in a removalist company, and where can you find the best in Canberra?

Let’s find out.

What makes a great removalist company?

There’s more to being a great removalist company than efficiently moving boxes and furniture between locations. We recommend keeping an eye out for the following traits when choosing a removalist for your next move:

  • Transparent pricing. Your removalist should be upfront with you about how much things will cost. There should be no unexpected fees or charges. If there are additional costs – such as for the move taking longer than expected, or picking up items from multiple locations – your removalist should make these clear at the start.
  • Respectful of your property. The best removalists treat customers’ property like their own – this means keeping mess and disruption to a minimum while being exceptionally careful with your belongings.
  • Reliability. Your chosen removalist company should show up on time and ready to work. They should use their time efficiently to help you get settled in to your new place sooner.
  • Customer service. Look for friendly, warm and professional customer service – both when you book your move and from the moment the removalists that turn up on the day.
  • Additional services. If you’d like your removalist company to take care of jobs like packing/unpacking boxes, check that this is something they can offer.

Carmen Greens Furniture Removals & Storage

Carmen Greens Furniture Removals & Storage

Family owned and operated with offices in Canberra, Goulburn and the South Coast, Carmen Greens are great if you need help with both removals and storage. They’re great at accommodating special requests, doing everything from carton pick-up and delivery, pet, plant and vehicle relocation, disassembling and reassembling furniture, supplying packing materials, packing breakable items like fine china or electrical goods, or even post-move cleaning. They even provide plastic covers for fabric items and portable wardrobes.

When you contact them they’ll arrange for one of the owners (either John or Paul) to come out and give you a personalised quote so you’ll know exactly what you’ll be up for. KT67 said “Carmen Green, they did a fantastic job of our last move and charged by the hour with no hidden charges. They were the first removalists who worked out the huge recliner couch came apart which meant unlike previous removals the door frames didn’t cop a beating.”

Their vehicles are fitted with dust-proof packing blankets, lifting straps and trolleys so they can move heavy items quickly and they include fire, collision and overturn insurance for free. They’re also great if you’re moving interstate because they don’t subcontract to third parties.

Their prices are good and they can help out with things like insuring valuable items for the move, disassembling your furniture or getting rid of unwanted furniture. They carry moving blankets and their trucks are fitted with padding and straps, so your things shouldn’t get damaged during transit. They also have a decent fleet of trucks and trailers in different sizes, so you won’t waste money paying for a larger truck than you need.

You should get really good service if you call them and speak to Yesu, with one Rioter (AmyB) commenting on how valuable his advice was helping them get ready for the move, and he even called them the night before to double-check they were still good to go for the following day.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do removalists do?
On top of physically moving your boxes and furniture from your old home to your new one, removalists offer a few other services. Removalists can pack your belongings for you, unpack them when they get to your new home, and you can even hire boxes and packing materials from them if you need to.
Why should I hire a removalist?
Hiring a removalist will ensure that your items are transported professionally, and that the whole moving process is taken care of efficiently. If you have to move large pieces of furniture, such as fridges, lounge suites, beds or tables, a removalist will be best equipped to transport them properly. They can also take as many of your boxes as you would like them to, minimising the number of trips you might need to make between your old and new homes.
How much does a removalist cost?
There are a variety of factors that affect the cost of hiring a removal service. Generally, removalists will give you a quote based on: - The size of the truck they will need to fit your load - The distance they need to travel - How many trips they will need to make - Any extra services you have requested Consider these factors when asking for a quote, and try comparing between multiple services to find what suits you.
Are removalists liable for damage?
While removalist companies are required to use due care and skill, most removalist companies are not liable for damage and cover - make sure you ask your service about their policy and double check the fine print before you hire them. Generally, removalists are not liable as long as the movers immediately report any damage taken during the move. However, if you are concerned, a good tip is to take pictures of your furniture before it is loaded onto the truck, and then check everything when you arrive at your new home.
What do I need to do to prepare for removalists?
There are a few things you can do to make the moving process efficient and stress-free for everyone involved. For instance, unless you've hired your removalists to pack your belongings for you, make sure you've correctly packed and labelled your boxes prior to the move - labelling boxes with descriptions such as "fragile," "Bedroom 1," or "this side up" will make the unpacking process a lot easier on you and your removalists. Another good way to prepare for the removalists is to make sure you both have the same list of items that they are expected to take and double checking it on the day so that nothing is left behind. And finally, make sure someone is waiting at the destination to help supervise the removalists as they unpack.

I had a unique move where I had old, antique furniture and we required the move and pick up to be 3 locations. Capital Removal were really transparent and easy to deal with and the move went very smoothly. Highly recommended!

We used Carmen Greens to move from Canberra to Sydney. They were absolutely brilliant. Just so professional. I cannot recommend them highly enough. They were flexible and accommodating to all requests. Always on time. They were also quite reasonably priced.

We recently used the team at Capital Removal for our move. Moving house can be stressful and we have had some ordinary experiences in the past with our removals companies but the team at Capital Removal were great. I booked over the phone and had lots of questions and the owner Scotty was great to deal with as were the team who helped us move on the day.

I just moved house last week, and used ACT MOVERS, they were very professional from the moment of the booking, every detail was taken care of in their email correspondence which helped make the move so much easier. The staff were always contactable by phone or email and knew all the details of my complicated move. The truck showed up on time, well equipped and the workers were very experienced and polite. After a quick chat with the driver I discovered the secret of good service in this industry is to not overbook jobs as other companies tend to do. So, if you are lucky enough to get a spot with these guys for your move, there is nothing to worry about. They really take the stress out of moving.

We just moved between Camberra suburbs with Mitchell Family Removals. Can’t speak highly enough of them. Colin and Gary worked twelve hours straight with no lunch break; they were friendly, professional and efficient. Would definitely recommend.

I moved 10 times in 12 years and finally settled in my forever home. My wife and I agreed to go with the bigger companies, We just figured they would be a safe bet… each move was a new experience but unfortunately, it was worse than the last.
From scratched floors, cracked stairs, marks and holes on walls, ripped carpet, damaged and broken furniture. One company reversed into my house and knocked a corner wall down. Another crew had a fight amongst themselves on our driveway.
I couldn’t believe the lunacy we were paying to see. We do laugh about it now.
I asked my real estate agent if he knew of any good removalists, he suggested White Knight. They also came highly recommended to us in Melbourne as we were looking to move back to Canberra. Though at that time we regrettably went with another company.
Since then, White Knight has moved us 4 times. Matt (the owner) has packed our stuff away in the truck in one go every time, my wife and I couldn’t believe it, it is impressive to see. Above all, nothing has ever been damaged.
I can assure you, guys like this are hard to find.
Thanks for everything White Knight.

We recently relocated from just outside the ACT to western Sydney. Colin and Garry from Mitchell Family Removals did a stellar job. The level of care and consideration was amazing; they looked after our (mountain of) belongings as you would if it were the Mona Lisa. Everything packed onto the truck(s) with precision, and wrapped and stacked to prevent damage. We highly recommend them!!

After reading reviews on this thread about White Knight, we recently used them to move house, but had a bad experience. They scratched the front of our fridge by dropping it in a stairwell, chipped several wooden chair legs, and worst of all, put a small ~5cm hole in our plaster wall after pushing a door knob through it after removing the door stop. This didn’t concern us greatly until we contacted Diane to discuss repairs, however she angrily argued that it was ‘our fault’ (somehow?) and that we shouldn’t expect them to spend the time, effort or expense to rectify the damage they caused. Mind-blowing arrogance. Will never use this company again.

Hi, We recently booked our move with ACT Movers http://www.actmovers.com.au – BEST MOVE EVER!
We booked in advance & the guy on the phone (Yesu?) was very helpful, gave us very good advice for getting ready before the move & for on the day of the move. Yesu called me the night before to
confirm booking & made sure we were still good to go. The guys arrived on time, got started straight away, took very good care of our items & genuinely cared about making our move swift & successful. Not only that they were clean, sensibly dressed, did not stop for cigarette breaks or any break for that matter! They even helped us disassemble 2 beds! We will be recommending ACT Movers to anyone & we will definitely be using them for our next move

I’d like to second this recommendation. I used ACT Movers service recently and it’s very nice experiences. The two guys arrived on time. They treated the items very carefully. The minimum booking was for two hours and not cheap, but I’m happy with their services. Highly recommended!

I can highly recommend Mitchell Family Removals.
We recently relocated a disability service from one site in Canberra to another. Colin and Gary from Mitchell Family Removals were fantastic and great to work with. They were hard working and really helpful, and showed incredible patience as we had clients accessing both sites.

I had a great experience with White Knight Transport in April 2014 for a local move between suburbs. They were professional, careful with our stuff, and worked hard. The price was competitive were the second cheapest of five quotes that I received. Sometimes there are reasons not to go cheap. My move was more difficult than they anticipated because of poor street access, and I am appreciate their effort. (Just an aside: I wouldn’t book an afternoon move with any mover because the first job of the day can take longer than expected and that throws off their schedule.)

One firm I would NEVER recommend is Grace Removals. I paid extra by using them as I thought their reputation was good. The move from Canberra to Newcastle proved this wrong. One damaged lounge and smashed statue says otherwise. Paying upfront you don’t have much recourse. Efforts to settle my claim have met with lack of service and almost no communication on their part.

imarty imarty 1:27 pm 30 Sep 13

OK, here’s something you don’t see everyday on Riotact, positive feedback.

We used White Knight last week for our move and are very happy. We were quoted on both an hourly rate and an estimate based on the amount of furniture etc we had with what ever works out cheapest being what we’ll pay. They also recommended three guys would be best for our move.
Lee, Quentin and Karl turned up right on time, were very friendly, took a look through the house and suggested two trips would be quickest rather than packing everything in one trip.

Two loads and under five hours later a large three bedroom house and garage full of crap was transported to another three bedroom house with garage with a minimum of fuss and zero damage or breakages. Admittedly it was neighbouring suburbs but that does not detract from the great job they did. The boys also helped out with moving some existing furniture in the new place to different rooms.

If you’re looking to move, White Knight Removalists come highly recommended from this rioter.

Wanted to bump this thread and would prefer to see positive comments from regular posters rather than non regulars of you know what I mean…
Urchin, Mighty Joe, how did you go?

I’m quite pastoral to him myself.

I’ll give feedback on Whiteknight shortly, i’ve booked them for a move within the next 3 weeks.

Have you had your move yet MightyJoe? We’ll be in need of a removalist also soon and have been solicited by Whiteknight and Chess.

I had a very good experience with Chess Removals. All my furniture was individually wrapped in packing blankets and carefully loaded and unloaded. Not one single scratch anywhere. They also arrived on time!
