Flemington Road duplication proceeds

By johnboy - 13 March 2009 7

Jon Stanhope informs us that he’s awarded a design and construction contract for the duplication of Flemington Road.

Work on the Flemington Road duplication, from Wells Station Drive in the south of Hibberson Street at the gateway to the Gungahlin Town Centre, is expected to start in mid 2009.

The existing traffic lanes – one lane in each direction – will be maintained during construction to minimise traffic disruption.

The Flemington Road duplication is due for completion in 2010.

Flemington Rd was built around 2003-2004. Since then it’s been widened as it approaches the housing before Gungahlin marketplace, 2 set of traffic lights have been installed, another 3 intersections have been built.

Does anyone know the criteria for an intersection to be controlled by traffic lights as opposed to a roundbout?

The planning, especially in relation to traffic, has been pretty dismal in Gungahlin since Palmerston was built in the early 90s. It should come as no surprise to anyone that this is how the area will be developed. I expect Tuggeranong experienced the same issues as well.

Tuggeranong had the multilane Parkway back when Kambah was the furtherest suburb. Gungahlin only has the GDE goat track complete with bottle necks and yet Gungahlin would have to be close to being half finished I would think.

Are they actually planning to duplicate it all the way from the town centre through to Northbourne Ave?

Or is it another attempt at appearing to do something, whilst achieving little?

Fully duplicated, service roads, plus with space down the centre for bidirectional light rail.

You can see a cross-section of the corridor design on the Gungahlin Community Council website at http://www.gcc.asn.au/News/Planning-Development/flemington-road-plans.html

On that subject, when is the rest of the GDE duplication due to occur? Better yet, what planning does the govt have to address the transport issues in this area?

We have new suburbs coming up (Crace/Casey) with no improvements to the road infrastructure around them? What gives? The amount of land sold out there in the past 10 years should mean *a lot* of funds from Stamp duty.. where the re-investment back into the area?

At least you have a shopping centre in Gungahlin now. Back in my day…

Curious – given the design was for the section from Well Station Drive to Sapling Street…

Would be great if it was going all the way through though. Flemington Rd is a capacity and then some in the mornings now, as so many people have givn up on the Gungahlin Drive joke.

To get out of Harrison, we have a left turn slip lane, but I’ve had to start going up to the lights to trigger them then backing up to get in the slip lane – it’s then only way we can get a break in the traffic some days.

The chronic lack of foresight that has got us to this situation is gobsmacking – a town of some 38,000 people, with almost everyone forced to commute out, but not a single one of the commuter roads up to the job…

Oh – and something like a third of us on that commute deliberately steered THROUGH the town centre street to boot…That takes a truly special kind of foresight to pull that off.

Since then it’s been widened as it approaches the housing before Gungahlin marketplace, 2 set of traffic lights have been installed, another 3 intersections have been built. And now it’s going to be duplicated. Not a bad effort from this ‘government’ – 6 years of disruption and costs probably far exceeding the amount it would have cost if it was dual lanes from day one. GDE fiasco but on a smaller scale…
