A large group of revellers has thrown rocks and glass bottles at police officers during a public order incident at Sutton last night.
While police have not confirmed the people had been attending Summernats, they have issued a warning that additional police officers will be out in force to avoid a repeat of what happened.
Police are continuing their investigations after an officer was struck by a rock and two police vehicles were damaged during the incident.
About 11:45 pm (Friday, 3 January), officers from Monaro Police District were called to a hotel on the Federal Highway Service Road, Sutton, following reports a large number of people were gathered in the area.
Officers arrived to find approximately 2000 people and 500 vehicles at the location and on the road before people began to throw rocks and glass bottles at police and their vehicles.
Police said rocks were thrown and struck a senior constable in the back of the head, cracked the rear windscreen of one police vehicle, and broke the side mirror and rear window of another.

Acting Superintendent of Monaro Police District Neil Grey, said he is extremely disappointed with the behaviour that was on display last night.
“It is appalling how, at a time when the state’s south is facing serious bushfire threat, some individuals choose to conduct themselves in such a reckless manner,” A/Supt Grey said.
“This type of behaviour is dangerous and unacceptable, and it is lucky that no one was seriously injured as a result. Tonight, police resources will be out in force to ensure the public’s safety and avoid a repeat of last night’s events.
“The safety of the public is our number one priority and as we are expecting an influx of thousands of people to the area due to the nearby Summernats Car Festival, it is vital, now more than ever, for people to work with us in ensuring a safe outcome for all.”
