Privacy if you’re important enough on google street view?

For most of us we just have to live with the fact that a google car has been past our house taking photos. Here at RiotACT we support the right of anyone to take photos from public lands.

But a keen eyed reader has noted that there’s a weird gap at Mueller St Yarralumla in the Street View.

We’re given to understand Kevin Rudd’s new abode is along that way.

It’s nice for some isn’t it?

What’s Your opinion?

They removed my house photo within a week when I asked too.

Street view is a national security risk I don’t care what anybody says. While those nigerian scammers are trying to socially engineer you via email/phone into ripping off your identity, or your money they can see exactly where you live and get more info via street view. Or potential terrorists can use it to suss out high security areas from afar like russell and the like which aren’t blacked out. Even thieves can check your house out without driving past.

Actually I thought it would make ordinary residents more of target due to looking like they have something to hide perhaps…

And snurp is not necessarily Christian; I was about to post the same link but he beat me.

I wasn’t intending to suggest that snurp was our resolute reporter from The Australian. I was merely making reference to the link to say “hi”.

Rarely, in the history of the world, has too much freely available information proven to be a threat to anyone (except maybe religious control of the masses). And if those Nigerian scammers are such a threat to you, I hate to think what will happen if a locally based scammer ever tries to rip you off. It is not like no one in Australia has ever tried a scam or planned a robbery in person…

However I have to admit, being part of the tin foil hat bridge does sound like fun.

Sounds like you are already?

Anyone can have the photo of their house removed from Google, you don’t need to be a VIP for that privledge… A few people around my house have done it… (myself included)

I can’t remember exactly how, but from memory all you need to do is click on a link asking for the photo to be removed and the reason why. Stating you don’t want your house shown to all seemed to do the trick…

I’ve always found Christian Kerr to be fairly balanced. Having met him (sure, some years ago), he’s not a rabid right-winger.

Hi, no I’m not Christian. My girlfriend sent me the Oz link, and right away I thought of this thread

G’day Christian, nice to meet you.

Nice step up for Christian isn’t it? From writing intelligent political analysis for Crikey.com to partisan guff for The Australian (‘LABOR POLITICIAN IS RICH AND SECRETIVE’).

Cant.
