Privacy if you’re important enough on google street view?

For most of us we just have to live with the fact that a google car has been past our house taking photos. Here at RiotACT we support the right of anyone to take photos from public lands.

But a keen eyed reader has noted that there’s a weird gap at Mueller St Yarralumla in the Street View.

We’re given to understand Kevin Rudd’s new abode is along that way.

It’s nice for some isn’t it?

What’s Your opinion?

Have a look for the US Embassy. You get directed about 500m away, and there are no close up photos if you manually try to navigate towards it.

Never let William of Ockham get in the way of a good conspiracy theory, I always say.

Since Google is so out of date, isn’t Rudd’s house still under construction in the pic?

I guess you could drive past and take your own photos…if you’re that way inclined.

I noticed this yesterday, too. But it’s a bit unfeasible that Rudd forces are at play with Google when you can still see THIS.

Nearmap don’t have a streetview equiv. Although, their oblique aerial photos show that part of the street…

http://www.nearmap.com/ doesn’t have the same squeamishness and has imagery current at 7 July unlike Google’s 3 year old stuff.

In possible defence of google, it is a pretty small section of the street which is missing street view. You see gaps in all sorts of places, apparently the result of some breakdown in their dataset, rather then privacy (for example in the middle of random country roads where there is nothing but cows.

Having said that, the gaps in street view, around the US embassy make it pretty likely you are right.

Interesting, it works both ways too.

I will flip the bird to him as I go past on my pushy everyday if you like?
