Over the weekend, over 50 hardy volunteers fronted up on Satuday and about 40 volunteers (some battle-worn from the day before and some new blood) returned on Sunday, braving the cold and frosty conditions to breathe new life into mountain biking at Mount Stromlo. Under the guidance of Australia’s best trail designer Glen Jacobs, the volunteers had completed approximately 6km of world class mountain bike trails by Sunday afternoon. The new trails take advantage of the gorgeous views over Canberra from the top of Mt Stromlo, and will guarantee Canberra’s return to the mountain biking capital of Australia.

The next working bee is scheduled for July 15 & 16, anyone interested is very welcome to attend and morning tea and lunch is provided. For more information please see the Stromlo Development section on the CORC (Canberra Off-Road Cyclists) website.

There might be some NS stuff eventually, but we have to slowly warm ACT Forestry to the idea. Meanwhile there will be a few TTFs (Technical Trail Features) consisting of log rides, natural rock drops, and other descrete technical A-lines.

Hmmm Now if we were only allowed Northshore. 🙁

The current trail builing work is on what will be known as the trunk trail, which will link up all the new trails at Stromlo – so it’s a fairly easy XC trail. The plan for Stromlo will see new XC trails built for all skill levels, the existing DH trail will be revamped, and a new world class (ie. pants wetting) DH trail will be built. There are also rumours that CORC is looking to build a very long (like 7km) DH trail running off the other side of Stromlo, which would be sweeeet (yes, painful but sooo sweeeet 🙂

So was it XC or DH that was made?

BTW – I underestimated the numbers that turned up for the trail building, over 100 people over the two days. More details on the CORC site here.

It was a really great day, and everyone was really amped to see the return of Stromlo trails. The trail building was hard work (if you were moving large rocks like I chose to do) and by the afternoon I was tired, but not too tired to get my bike and ride from the base of Stromlo to the top. Twice!

Damn. Missed it!

Oh well – have to come to the next one – how did it go?
