ACT Policing is seeking witnesses to two deliberately lit grass fires at the Stony Creek Nature Reserve (Tuesday, January 15) and the Griffith Park Nature Reserve yesterday (Wednesday, January 16).
Around 2.45pm, the ACT Rural Fire Service attended the Stony Creek Nature Reserve on the eastern bank of the Murrumbidgee River, about 1.5km south of the Uriarra Crossing to fight a large grass fire.
Over the next eight hours, earth moving machinery, helicopter water bombing and ground units were required to control the 10 hectare fire.
Around 11.00am on Wednesday, January 16 the Rural Fire Service Operations Manager notified police that the fire was deemed suspicious.
AFP Forensics attended the incident location and established a crime scene.
In a second separate incident police attended the Griffith Park Nature Reserve, adjacent to the Brumbies headquarters, following reports of a grass fire.
ACT Fire and Rescue, along with ACT Parks and Wildlife Rangers, and several players from the Brumbies rugby squad were quickly on hand to extinguish the fire prior to the police arriving. Police are treating the fire as suspicious.
Anyone who may have been in the Stony Creek or Griffith Park Nature Reserve areas at the time of the fires and can assist police with their investigation is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or at www.act.crimestoppers.com.au. Information can be provided anonymously.
