A man in black who tried to steal an elderly woman’s handbag sparked an apparent attempted citizen’s arrest in Mawson yesterday.

ACT Policing is seeking witnesses and dash-cam footage following the incidents, which happened at about 11.35 am on 7 October.

They say a man dressed all in black opened the passenger door of a vehicle parked in a shopping centre car park to steal a handbag while an elderly person was in the driver’s seat.

The man then ran to a parked stolen blue 2013 Subaru Forester bearing Queensland registration plates 898 TOO. He was seen driving towards Mawson Place.

A community member who witnessed the incident chased the vehicle and attempted to open the driver’s side door of the Subaru while it was stopped in traffic at the intersection of Heard Street and Mawson Street. The vehicle then sped off towards Mawson Place.
